Stock cam lift? was created by spdygon
Helping a friend out. Bike has 16k plus miles. We were checking the valve clearance and found all but one at .006 to .007.
We know they should be between.002 and .004.
He measured the cam lope and the it measure 362mm.
Is 362 the original cam lift?
My 79 kz1000 had z4 cams and it required.004 to .006 valve clearance.
So either he has after market cams or his cams are worn out.
Thoughts? His bike is a 78kz1000

Umm, I think you mean 36.2 mm - 362 mm = 36.2 cm which is more than a foot long (1 foot = 304.8 mm/30.48 cm).

Is 362 the original cam lift?...

No, neither is 36.2. Measure the base circle, perpendicular to the lobe center line, then subtract that measure from the lobe heel-to-nose measure you already took (36.2 mm), the result is the lift.

You state "We know they should be between.002 and .004."

Where did you come up with that specification? The KZ1000 Kawasaki Service Manual I have access to shows 0.05mm - 0.15mm which equals 0.002" - 0.006" Ed

Here's the table from the manual I have. The manual covers the 1981 - 1983 models, but I wouldn't have thought the 1978 models would have specs that were much different. Ed

ok
he has stock cams....Intake is 36.22 Exhaust is 35.55
so safe to assume that his cams are worn out at the base?
Or what else would cause loose valve clearances?
Normally valves get tight.

I just measured my extra set of KZ1000a cams, with about 15,000 miles on them:
Intake> 36.36mm x 28.30mm = 8.06mm lift, or .317"
Exhaust> 35.85mm x 28.18mm = 7.65mm lift, or .301"

No, the base should not be worn out. Nothing rubs on the base (that's why clearance is measured at the base), so it should not wear at all. Of course, if the owner has the valves so tight that there is zero clearance all bets are off, but that does not sound like it is the case here.

Valves do not always get tighter. I have had them vary a little both tighter and looser. Ed

Valves almost always get tighter. Maybe someone that didn't know what they are doing changed the shims?
