I'm wondering if it is fuelling, sometimes ignition and carb problems can be difficult to tell apart.

From the description it sounds like it could be a main jet badly wrong. It feels like your ignition is misfiring all over the place when in fact it is a main jet problem.

It was too rich. The spark plugs were black.

The needle jet clip works well at the 3rd position with ethanol laced gasoline but it needs to be on the second position with straight gas.

So it probably was not a knock issue then, but a misfire issue. That can sound like a knock.

I've recently found there is a company making rebuild kits with essentially defective needles. They are too skinny by a couple thousandths. This makes it so they are too rich, even at the maximum lean clip setting. They are using the Keyster part number to masquerade as a Keyster kit. I'm still writing it up. It'll be on the TK22 site, hopefully in the near future.

I guess I am going to take that back.

I switched to the second clip on the needle jet. I filled up with regular ethanol laced gas. The bike ran fantastic for about 10 miles.

Today, it started the same garbage. Bogging down over about 1\3 throttle in gears 3 and up. I tore the carbs down and two emulsifier tubes were nearly clogged. How can this happen? I have always used a fuel filter. I hope this is my problem. If not, I don't know what to do.

I also broke the timing chain tensioner removing the carb bowls. I now have to call off work until I can locate another one. I am in trouble here.

What kind of air filter do you have?

Emgo, inside the airbox. Around 2000 miles on it.

In addition, there was tons of garbage in the fuel tank. The petcock strainer was full of debris about halfway up.

I have cleaned this up as best as I can but I am now at a standstill until I source another tensioner.

Are you using a fuel filter set up after the tank selector ..... Before the carbs?

i wrapped my pickup tubes in the tank with filter material and safety wire. Works great as a primary filter.

Yes, a sintered bronze filter meant for lawnmowers and such. I know the pleated paper style ones filter better but they won't flow without a pump in my experience.

I was shocked to see so much crap in the carb bowls. Strangly enough only carbs 3 and 4 were affected. 1 and 2 were very clean.

Where did you source this filter material?

Here's what I use. Not cheap, but a great filter that is very small, filter element can be cleaned, passes up to 6 gallons per minute, and filters 10 micron particle size. I've had it on for 4,000 miles; no problems. Ed

A little beyond my budget, but that looks like a quality piece.
