Starter issue was created by gixxerkidd03
I'm having a starting issue. I rebuilt the starter thinking that the starters was failing. My question is , is the ring gear that the starter turns suppose to spin freely in one direction( counter clock wise) ? the bike is a 1980 kz750e four.

Ya battery is new. I'm putting a charger on it today because it was draining because I was trying to start it. The bike would crank but every couple in cranks It makes an odd noise. I don't know what else to look at

Could be the starter clutch ....... does it slip and grind for a couple seconds..... so many of us here are having that problem if I was younger I'd set up shop for that repair only.

That's exactly what's it sounds like. What should expect when I pull the starter clutch.

Goodness. I just found a video of what that job entails. I'm assuming it recommended to pull the motor out? I think this is the issue I'm having.
Another question, It's not possible to bench test these starters is it?

Do a little more searching (much info here) for the parts needed and parts recommended and be sure before you tackle it. Thinking there is a video on you tube with the sound it makes too ...... I had no dought it was it on mine ..... could feel it and picture it with my eyes closed. A few have layed it on its side and our head mods had a pic of him hanging his from the rafters .... even talk of flipping it upside down but that has its own problems.

I pulled the motor on mine but am now too busy (in my mind), too broke for the insurance and a few small things.... but mostly too lazy to get it back in even though its been done a while. and went pretty well.

You don't have to pull the motor. If the motor is already out it's an easier job, but it can be done with the motor still in the frame. Ed

True Ed (I should have mentioned that....(that's why your here to correct us amateur's) you could do it with the bike on the center stand but I could never climb under neath and get down and up a bunch of times to do it anymore.

Is removing the secondarily shaft only necessary to replace the chain? Or is there were I'll more than likely find a cracked clutch plate? I see some people doing the job only from the outside because their clutch isn't engaging at all. Mine is quite noisy and I think is more than likely my case.
If you guys have any videos or write ups you've seen In past feel free to drop a link. I appreciate all the help and quick responses to guys!
Eric

The gear and clutch assembly is on the shaft that is to be removed...... you won't be replacing the chain its the gear and roller, springs and pins that need to be replaced.......... my clutch assembly wasn't cracked but worn enough and old enough to replace. The rollers and sproket had a lot of chatter marks on them and the springs were defently weaker 1 worse than the other 2.

The video you found showed whats needed about as good as you'll find ....with it and the manual I felt it was spelled out really well ..... check out the write up under the thread 1981 KZ750 in the engine section for more info too and do a search for more ..... hours and hours of info on doing it on here. Your going to need a few tools too that you'll find by searching too ...... hand held impact w/a Jis bit or modded one, Elect or air impact for the clutch nut, torgue wrench (ft lb and Inch lb), clutch holder tool etc.
