Oil Leak Lower Case was created by Grnole
Hey Guys - I searched, and either I did not search correctly, or nobody bothered to post this.

I am getting an oil leak from 1/2 of the JIS screws from the lower case on the left side. Attached are some pictures. Any thought of an easy fix or what might contribute to this?

It doesn't seem to be from the oil pan/filter or the tach cable. I have cleaned these screws twice, and purposely (mostly due to rain) have not ridden in a week.

Are you sure it not coming from the seals? They get hard and start leaking with age.

Hey Steve, I am not sure. Bike is not on center stand, so the oil can be running to the end of the screw. I am not at home at the moment, If i were to want to change this seal... looks like this would be splitting my cases....? And a giant undertaking?

No, looks like you can take the cover off. Use a hand impact driver. Those screws are ON there. I replace all the screws with SS Allen's for future use. That's where your shift linkage is and may break springs. The seals go in/out from the inside.

Hey Dave - Good point. I am going to think that is prob unlikely... as I rode the bike... parked it a week and a half ago. Noticed leak next morning. Rolled it two feet, and cleaned up area with dry rag. Noticed Oil 2 days later. Cleaned it off to be sure, and noticed a slight drip again a few days later without bike being ridden.

Am I correct to assume I would be replacing gasket part number 24? And having to take everything else off to get to it?

Yup, check the seals while you're at it. Should be pliable. Could be someone else got in there before you.

I suspect the gasket (#24) is at fault here. As Steve noted, those phillips looking bolt heads are in fact JIS (Japanese Industrial System) bolts and need an appropriate bit or a modified phillips bit.....and can be a bear to remove cleanly, they seem to made of peanut butter they are so soft.

Replace seals 11, 21 and 22 and the gasket 24. All that stuff is 35 years old and if it ain't leaking now it will be soon.

Thanks guys. I called Z1 yesterday and before letting me order anything wanted me to go home and double check the tach seal. I checked it, no luck on it being just that... ha!

I am going to order a full oil seal kit and just do them all noted in previous post. Looking at it again in person it doesn't look as bad as I originally thought. Going to also order the allen head replacement screws to swap out whatever I can, I am aware that there are a few where clearance to the chain might be an issue, so Ill have to check that out...

Welp... its supposed to rain this weekend, so might as well take my bike apart

Finally got the time to tackle this. Once I got the cover off, I noticed that the majority of the time spent on this project would be to cleaning off the leftover gasket and glue that was on the transmission cover. My Oil seals were for the most part ok, The shift shaft seal seemed worn. But, the shift shaft gets the most action, and after all the time to get to that I think I am going to be much gentler to my gear selector ... :cheer:

Buttoned everything up... added oil... let it sit overnight. No leaks!

Took it for a test ride, No leaks!

Let it sit overnight after test ride..... Oil leak. The lower two screws in the T-cover have very minor drips. Sucks.

I used a JIS tip and tried to tighten them as best as I could, but it just seems like they don't want to seal up. I ordered some allen replacements. And I am going to replace those two screws in hopes that will do it.

Bummer.
