Motor upside down? was created by apbling
Probably a dumb question, but I'm going to be cleaning all the grime off my 550 motor and throwing a fresh coat of paint on it. If I drain the oil out completely, I can turn the motor upside down to clean it's belly and paint it, right? It's completely assembled and will be completely drained. Just making sure....

I don't see any problem with it as long as it's complete.

You may want to remove the oil pan first just to make sure there's no stray bits. Anything loose inside the engine will settle to the pan and could stay there for years with no problems. Turning the engine upside down might dislodge it and it will fall back up in the engine where it could cause issues. You're probably fine, but the half hour to check the pan is cheap insurance in my opinion.

Maybe not......how about just tilting onto its front then taking the oil pan off (I think that is an excellent idea of MDZ 1) to do a check.
550 motors aren't nearly as heavy as 900/1000 ones.
