I did something stupid...kz750h3
11 May 2015 18:55 - 11 May 2015 20:11
I was cleaning the timing advancer while it was still on the bike. I stupidly cranked the engine a few times the wrong direction...Now my bike won't start. How do I go about fixing this problem.
1982 kz750h3 ltd inline 4
I think it is an electrical issue. I was worried that turning it over backwards would cause the cams to jump teeth or something.
Time to get the wiring diagram and play what the hell is missing...

It shouldn't hurt anything to turn the engine backwards. Of course shouldn't do it, but not likely to hurt. More likely an assembly mistake. On some bikes it's possible to put the ignition pickup, or whatever it's called, the part that is on the shaft that needs lubrication periodically that triggers the ignition as the crankshaft turns. On some bikes and systems it's possible to put this back on the crankshaft 180 degrees out of time.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As Ron mentioned... did you remove the rotor from the advancer? Then it's possible you put it on backwards.

I'm assuming you cranked the engine by hand using a wrench? If so, what size?
You're supposed to turn the crankshaft clockwise using a 17mm wrench on the big crankshaft "nut".
I think there's a warning in the manual that if you turn the crankshaft by using the smaller inner
timing advancer bolt (14mm wrench), timing advancer damage might occur.
Also, the advancer bolt torque is 18-ft/lbs. When lubricating the advancer, separate the rotor from the body & fill the groove with grease.

I never removed the advancer, I used a 17mm.

So, how did you clean it. I would remove, check & lubricate it properly. The thing is kinda important.

I actually have been having issues with it cranking. I'm currently going through the wiring, hopefully I will find the problem soon.
