V&H Baffle modification was created by jeff80kz1000e2
Hi all, I have a vance hines megaphone and its too loud with out the baffle (even with a helmet ), & too quiet with the baffle. Anyone ever drill out the baffle or modify it to make it louder? I have a few ideas in mind, but I want to save myself a headache if anyone has done it alteady. I just worry a bit, that if I drill too much or remove the deflector plate at the end of the baffle behind the final exit holes I might create a whistle possibly. Thanks in advance. Bike is an 80 kz1000 st

I cut the back half of baffle off and it sounded quite nice... not too loud....

I left the baffle in my V&H but took out the packing. Ended up with a volume between fully baffled and completely uncorked.

I've always ran the baffle with not packing ...... removed the backing plate years ago and it sounds real nice and defently a little louder that way ...... I recently bought a competition baffle and its a little quieter than the reg baffle without the plate. (No packing on it either).

Try taking out the packing first. Here are the two. Stock and drag. I have the competition in it now. Turns heads every time and makes ponies with the packing still in.

Thanks, I didn't even realize at first that the baffles came with packing. I bought it used and the packing was already removed. I still think its too quiet with the packing removed.

Than ks. That info helps alot. Now I know that I can remove the backing plate and not waste money on the competition baffle if in fact the regular baffle with the backing plate removed brings up the noise a bit!

No prob. Thanks for the pics. All the replies have pointed me in the right direction and now I can make a decision based on what info you all have given me. So I forgot to mention and didn't realize my used one actually had packing in it at one point. ( It wasn't there when I purchased it ). Which is just fine with me because the packing is out and it's too quiet for my liking. I'm gonna remove that backing plate at the exit behind the holes at the end of the baffle and see how I like that.

I put on the Drag baffle and it was much too loud. Tried the stock one and it was like I put a cork in it's ass. The competition one is the best. Pulls clean through the red line.

Right on, appreciate the info. I think I will try a mod or two on this baffle that I have now. Now at least I know I have the option of the drag or competition baffles if all else fails. I suppose it depends on each of our individual thresholds on the decibels coming out of the pipe. For me, I just need it to be slightly quieter than the wide open pipe. I wear a helmet no matter what which allows me to tolerate more sound BUT it's AMAZING how gosh darn loud that straight pipe is even with a helmet on!! :silly:

The first plate in the baffle isn't just for making it quiet. It also supports the baffle from inside. They also have a effect on tuning. With the drag one, I lost top end. I'm running 33 MM Miks. The stock one required re-jetting for it to work. When I pulled it out when new, I tried the Competition and it worked better. The sound is also.
I'd keep that in mind when modifying it.
