does this sound like the clutch???(kz5550 help!!!)
22 Feb 2015 15:01
so i was riding on a long trip yesterday when all of a sudden i lost all power to the rear wheel like its stuck in N. i can hear it clicking into gear when i try shifting like it should it just doesnt want to engage the rear wheel. i did an oil change the day before the trip and the clutch seemed to be slipping a bit the morning of the trip i wasnt taking off like i should have been. she has about 27.5k miles on her ATM. do you think replacing the clutch plates would fix the issue or could it be something else in the tranny the motor runs just fine

Some clutches don't like some oils.
What type of oil did you use?
Also might want to check your clutch lever adjustment.
Good luck.

There are numerous possibilities.
Did you use automotive oil, or oil made specifically for wet clutch motorcycles? It does make a difference.
Did the drive chain break?
Did the drive (front) sprocket come off the output shaft?
If it happened while you were shifting, it could be a bent or broken shift fork. It could also be a broken and jammed up clutch release mechanism.
Could also be caused by the entire clutch assembly coming loose from the end of the crankshaft.
Clutch plates generally wear very gradually and give you plenty of warning before they quit.

Be sure to first check the nut that holds the front sprocket on. If that nut comes off you will immediately experience the symptoms you describe. Ed

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationSounds like more than clutch slippage to have no drive at all, does the clutch lever feel right? Have you tried adjusting it? is the clutch releasing?
Front sprocket coming off likely - has the chain gone slack? Does it freewheel smoothly in nuetral?
Clutch drum centre nut or primary gear going awol not sure it is even possible , look through the oil filler cap with a torch and see if the clutch basket is spinning. Transmission locked in neutral maybe ,
Ed good call, but on the 550's it is a lockplate with two m6 bolts rather than a nut. like this:

Chain is fine, i use valvaline motorcycle oil, clutch was acting a little weird before it died. I looked in the oil cap at the clutch and the plates are pushed away from the motor so im still thinking its a stuck clutch

When you have the bike on its center stand can you rotate the wheel while it is in gear?

Those ball and ramp pushrod actuators are a bit fiddly to set up, also there is a 3/8 ball between the pusher and pushrod.
What I said about the clutch basket spinning, dropped a bit of a clanger there, it was late and the red wine had muddled me... but if you have narrowed it down to a clutch not releasing then it is most likely adjusting the actuator as above.
