I use K&N 401 oil filters. I buy mine from Denniskirk.com but other places sell the (see links below). A lot of folks use WIX filters with success. Kawasaki filters are fine too. I recommend NOT using Fram filters as they are junk. When you change your oil be sure to buy oil that is marked JASO-MA compliant on the container. That will ensure the oil will not mess up the clutch in your bike. Most car oils will cause problems with the clutch because they have friction modifiers formulated not to hurt catalytic convertors. These friction modifiers, which are different than those in motorcycle oil or diesel oil, mess up the clutch friction plates. I use 10w-40 as recommended by Kawasaki. Ed

Napa also sells motorcycle oil filters, they are rebranded Wix filters. RotellaT is a favorite among many riders due to its reasonable price and JASO-MA compliance. It comes in 15W-40 in dino fluid and is around $15 a gallon at Walmart.

Ok, got KN401 and oil. What is the proper torque for drain and filter cover bolts? Also how much does a 77kz650c hold?

Engine drain plug torque is 9.5 - 12.0ft lbs. 10 - 11 ft lbs is enough; don't over tighten or you may strip a thread.
Oil filter mounting bolt torque is 13.0 - 16.0 ft lbs. 14 is enough; again, just don't overtighten it.

Be sure the bike is on the center stand (not side stand) when you drain the oil and change the filter. Total oil capacity is 3.5 liters (3.7 quarts). Don't overfill. The right side of the engine has an oil level sight glass (near the end of the brake pedal on the engine case). With the bike on the center stand add about 3 1/2 quarts (or a bit less) to an empty engine. See where that puts the oil on the sight glass. The level needs to be between the 2 lines; near but not over the top line is good. After you add the oil you may need to wait a fair amount of time before the oil level shows properly. You may even need to start the engine for a minute or so, then shut it off, give it some time, then check the level again. When the oil level stabilizes you can add a little more if needed to bring it up to the middle or closer to the top of the 2 lines. If you accidentally overfill it, put a piece of clear tubing into the engine through the filler hole and siphon some out (guess how i know  ) Ed

Well. I saw an old post from about 1.5 months ago youe were in ED. Talking to a guy about inches instead of foot lbs. So I bought a wrench that measures to 120 inch. Is there a conversion that would work? Also could you maybe post a pic of locations? Right now I am working from a Clymer which says 20-24 ft lbs for drain and 13-16 for cover and cant look at my bike right now to compare. The old post sent me looking for a "pan". I drive an hour to get to my bike right now

Get rid of the Clymer and get a Kawasaki Service Manual. If you try to tighten the drain plug to 20-24 ft lbs you will strip it and need a new oil pan. The engine drain plug torque is 9.5 - 12.0 foot lbs.

To convert INCH pounds to FOOT pounds you divide the INCH pounds by 12. So the maximum setting on a 120 INCH pound torque wrench equals 10 FOOT pounds. That would work for the drain plug since the proper torque for it is 9.5 - 12 foot lbs., but its a little too light for the oil mount bolt. In order to work on these bikes you really should have 2 torque wrenches. Take a look at the recommendation I made under "TOOLS" in the link below.

kzrider.com/forum/10-new-members/589649-...r-savannah-ga#594587

Personally, I have one torque wrench that is calibrated from 30 - 250 INCH pounds and one that is calibrated from 10 - 100 FOOT pounds. I also have one calibrated heavier for working on my car, but it isn't needed for the bike.

When you look under the engine you'll see the drain plug as shown and the oil filter mounting bolt in the middle of a round finned plate in the position shown below. Ed

Well if you have an inch pound wrench the formula is twelve to one as expected, so if the spec is 10 ft/lb it would equal 120 in/lb on that tool. For filters you can use many as the size was common, CB750 Honda used same filter as did GL1200 goldwing. I bought like 20 goldwing filters in bulk for a good price many years back.

No need to torque drain plug or filter bolt, snug them up with a 3/8 drive ratchet and call it a day.
Theres no reason to crank them down insanely tight, its only going into aluminum. :)
Still recovering, some days are better than others.
