1980 KZ 750 G Twin Very hard to kick over was created by buffalowinger
I have a 1980 kz 750 g twin that i just purchased the other day. i've started working on trying to get it run, but for some reason it is very hard to turn over. The kick start is very hard to kick with all 200lbs of me standing on it. the electric start it will turn is about one revolution every 10 times it cranks. If I remove the spark plugs though, it will kick over much easier. The compression is fine the plugs fire, but when i put the plugs in, it's like the compression is so high that I can't get it to turn over. and when i do, it turns so slow that it will never start. Any idea what could be causing this. I know the 750 twin's are harder to kick than most bikes. but it shouldn't take 200lbs kicking it as hard as i can to get it to turn a revolution.

just a little update. I changed the oil and let some marvel mystery oil sit in the cylinder for about an hour. went out to kick it, and it kicks over very easily without the plugs in now, but the minute i put the plugs in or try to hook up my compression tester, it absolutely refuses to kick over or work with the electric start.

years ago i had a gsxr 750 srad , i bought it from a breakers yard. it had stood many years . anyways after cleaning out the old fuel i got it running well . well left it over night, went to fire it up the next day . it wouldn't turn over , so i whipped the plugs out and hit the button and it turned over fine however , alot of gas flew out the spark plug hole. it turned out the carb float seat was leaking gas and filled the cylinder up over night . just food for thought for you .

I had thought that might be a possibility, however, i completely went through the carb last night, and when i kick it without the plugs, nothing comes out.

My 750 twin is a real bear to kick on the rare times I have had to (dead battery). If the engine is nice and free without plugs, then I don't know what to check?

Have you tried doing a push start on it? Have a healthy acquaintance give you a nice running push and dump the clutch. Don't forget to have the the ignition and kill switch turned on first, LOL. Done that a couple of times. See that will get it started.

I have not tried push starting it, i may try that tomorrow if that doesn't work, i'm going to pull the valve cover tomorrow and check all of that out. can the valve cover be removed with the motor in??

Yup just remove the tank. Depending on whether a previous owner used rtv you may need a new valve cover gasket though.

Remove the electric starter and clean/replace it. Yes, the 750 twins suck to kick over, I'm 250 lbs and the 76 i flipped two years ago was a bear to kick over. Starter also would lug, i took it apart and cleaned it, then it worked perfectly

So i pulled the valve cover. it seems as if there is friction in the cam's, is there any way to try to lube them up without running a risk of throwing it out of time and creating a whole other problem.
