BIGKEVIN wrote: I got my ZSM001-113 shim tool today and tried to get the shims out to measure them. I turned the highest point of the cam down to depress the valve, but I couldn't figure out where to put the tool to keep the valve depressed so I could get the shims out. The tool didn't come with directions and probably isn't hard to use, but as usual, I probably made it harder than it is. Does anyone have a video or good directions on how to use to the tool so I dont mess up the cams or the valves ?

Under FILEBASE (in the ribbon toward top of the computer monitor screen), there's a complete KZ900 Factory Service Manual that may be downloaded for free.

Here's a direct link to the download.
Click here > www.kzrider.com/filebase/doc_download/43...asaki-service-manual

After downloading, on page 16, there are instructions and a picture of the special tool positioned to remove/replace the shim.

Good Fortune! :)

I go took all of the shims out one at a time and measured all 8 of them.

#1 exhaust measured 2.70
#1 intake measured 2.55
#2 exhaust measued 2.67
#2 intake measured 2.50
#3 exhaust measured 2.60
#3 intake measured 2.70
#4 exhaust measured 2.70
#4 exhaust measured 2.70.
All of the shims can be moved when the cam lobe is pointed away from the spring.
I plan on ordering all new shims. Can someone tell me what shims I should order for each intake and exhaust ? Thanks

What was each valve's clearance before removing its shim?

For the valves with incorrect clearance, some swapping of the shims may be possible in order to minimize the number of new shims needed.

Where clearance is insufficient -- but shim can be moved -- usually the next size smaller shim will regain necessary clearance.

Good Fortune! :)

The valve clearance on all of the valves were tight. I could not get a .002 inch feeler gauage in any of them

Its really hard to say exactly. Did you verify you could not get your thinist feeler gauge in between the cam and bucket? But you could rotate the shim in the bucket with the lobe pointing away? If thats true for the buckets, then you would want to drop probably one size on each. Two sizes would defitenly do it, if the one size drop dosent. But two sizes might be to much. So i would just start with one.

Good you measured all of the shims.
Use the thinner shims you have now to check the clearances on the others. So use a 260 where there was a 270 and so forth checking to see if the clearance is correct.
If you couldn't fit a feeler gauge of .002" in, but they would spin. i would suggest Two shim sizes less. So that is where you had a 270 a 260, where you have a 255 a 245. You shouldn't need to buy all new shims, just the ones you can't move to adjust to the correct clearance.

OK, that makes sense. I'll put a 2.60 where a 2.70 currently is and then measure to see if the clearnace is good or not. Thanks for the help.

Take the smallest shim...2.50 and use it to measure the clearances on the other valves. Switch the ones you can to get you in range. On my 900 if the shims were tight I had to go down 2 sizes to get me in range. .5 mm = 2 thousands of an inch.

Factory specified clearance is 0.05~0.10 millimeters.
Where the intake measures 0.05 mm, many owners prefer 0.10 mm on the intakes.
Some owners also prefer up to 0.15 mm on the exhaust valves.

Good Fortune! :)

I moved the 2.5 mm shim to the valves that had the 2.7 mm shims and I was able to get the feeler gauage between the shim and cam. Looks like I need to move down .2 mm on all the shims. Are the 29 mm shims that Z1 sells the correct shims for a 1976 KZ 900 ? Thanks for all replies and help.
