has anyone ever tried fitting the turbo in front of the motor like newer sportbikes do?im debating on doing this with the bike im working on,my old 1428 has the turbo mounted normal but i think it makes it run a lot hotter with the exhuast running right next to motor!i think running a blow-through setup would keep more heat off the motor, and allow it to suck more coldair instead of hot air behind the engine,im also thinking electronic fuel injection with this setup i always hated the lag with the other bike,i think injection will solve this!the guy who setup the last turbo got run out of business, which was a good thing!any ideas?

84-85 GPz750 Turbo had the turbo mounted in front. You might check out www.750turbo.com and ask, some of those folks are insane :D :D

Or Lorcan might post here, since his GPz750 Turbo is running in the 9's in the quarter and has run ~185 mph on a land speed course I figure he knows what he's talking about :)

Oh yeah, that's his streetbike, not his racebike :D

It is an intercooler, I have one on mine too. If you can get some headers made up to mount the turbo in front, but high enough to get a good oil drain back to the sump, then that is the way to go. You could use the plenum and entire injection system off the 750 turbo. Some GPz1100 throttle bodies, bigger injectors, Powercommander....how fast do you want to go? ;)

Garrett turbos from your local Garrett dealer or atpturbo.com or turbometrics.com (just got a GT22 from them, nice little unit up to 280hp). You can look up various size turbos and their specs on www.turbobygarrett.com . Fuel pumps I use Walbro, injectors from RC Engineering, the hardest bit you will need to fabricate if you use 750 turbo stuff for the inlet side is the headers and tailpipe. Beware of "cheap" Garrett turbos on ebay - there are a lot of chinese copies around. Some radiator companies also make intercoolers, hunt around for a good price, I pay around £200 ($350) for mine. I'd strongly recommend you use some sort of programmable fuelling device - DTA ECUs are good for the money, or you can use a 750 turbo ECU with a Powercommander 3, just bear in mind that PCs only have a limited range of adjustment. If you can run to it get a Wideband Commander or Innovative LM1, both do wideband lambda datalogging. Lots more about this stuff on my site and also Gary Evan's board is very helpful about all sorts of projects p090.ezboard.com/bazbiketech . Last but not least - don't skimp on the race fuel, it might be expensive but it's a lot cheaper than a new engine ;)

another point of interest is that a draw thru turbo system can't run a blow off valve. if you were to plumb one in, you would create a lean condition every time that thing popped. it would vent the boost WITH the fuel included.

as far as nothing registering on the boost gauge, here's a couple of cents worth of speculation.

my 1075 turbo won't make ANY boost until over 5k rpm. the turbo will spin at idle, yes. this is normal. at the rpm of an idling turbo, you are NOT going to see any boost at all. the compressor needs to be spinning *much* faster than idle.

also, with no load, you will NOT see any boost on any turbo engine. you can sit there and rev it to the moon, but there will be no boost.

so, that being said, you state that you have it "running great" but you want to get it running better, which kind of says it's not running all that great.

does the engine pull all the way to redline smoothly and easily? does it cut out at any particular rpm? does it start to take off then it lays down? if you are too lean on the large needle on that bendix, it won't pull to redline. you will not have enough fuel, so it won't make any boost.

dial the high end needle in and lightly seat it. then dial it out about 2.5 to 3 full turns as a starting point. then, make a pull. if it doesn't pull clean to redline, dial in another quarter of a turn. you should get more rpms every part turn. when you can pull it wot to redline, then you are close. i'd drop in another quarter turn, just to be sure.

also, keep a close eye on your timing. if your bike has too much advance under boost, then you will for sure detonate. you want to keep an eye on that. only run good fuel too. race gas if you can manage it.

I've just been busy with school, took it for a couple of rides back in July, hits about 95 in 3rd and then it sputters out in 4th and 5th, it needs more gas, need to run new fuel lines and pick up a new k&n filter, just haven't had the time to dial in the bendix carb, i was looking for hrs 42, but no money as usual, i hated seeing it sitting in my brothers garage, the bike sounds amazing though, maybe i'll make a video of it running before i take it home and put it in storage for the winter, so i've just been riding my other kz for last couple of months, its expensive to insure two bikes and a truck

Cool video! I didn't realize it was an SR. That was my first KZ 22 years ago and I just bought back the same bike last month (the exact same bike, not one like it). I was wondering about a turbo and had never seen one for a 650, so when I searched the forum I started reading this post. I was bummed to see it end. Thanks for the update and keep us informed! :)
