fresh 74mm bore, new mtc pistons and rings question is; should i oil the pistons and rings, or install them dry. i would think dry would cause excessive wear

I was taught to put them in a clean dry bore to help seat the rings,of course the 1940s was a while back.
You crank it over first with no plugs in motor to check everything out,it doesn't take long to get oil slopped up there once the motor has been cranked over.
Alright let the debate begin! :woohoo:

I always rub a little oil all over each cylinder before installation. I use straight non-detergent 30w for break-in with excellent results. Kind of hard to get straight 30 now though. (Thanks Tree Huggers !)

Nice scooter Wireman! ;)

I have always coated rotating parts with oil or lube of some sort. More damage can happen in the intitial cranking of a dry engine.

I was told when i built my motor that i could put the piston and rings in dry to make the rings seat fast. I was told by a very reliabale source thats what alot of the drag racers do.

One of the above posts is an absolute lie....You figure it out ;) Shouldn't be difficult.

If you correctly prep the block.......

Light coat of oil on the skirts.
Oil the bores up in about 1 inch, lightly to assist assembly.

After the block is on, turn the engine over several times, then bring each pair of cylinders to BDC and wipe any excess oil out.

Extra oil will just blow in the exhaust ports and start the carbon process. Modern, hard coated cylinders are generally suggested to use dry assembly BUT you don't have one of those...It's an OLD Kawasaki...keep that in mind.

Or you could split the difference and do each hole a different way

Make sure you don't overlap the oil ring.
