camchain and mystery part?
03 Feb 2013 21:22 - 03 Feb 2013 21:29
I have a barn find 79 b3 kz1000 project. 45kmiles.
Pretty beat up. Top of the engine is pre79 bottom is 79.
Basically they removed the emissions stuff.
I am rebuilding the motor at this time here is the questions?
First when I removed the head and than pulled up the second part and put a long flexable tool with a magnet on the end through to hold up the cam chain. After getting the engine components off I went to pull out the magenet after tieing up the cam chain of coarse there was a part on the magnet I dont know where it came from.
I have the repair manual and I can't find the part in there. I watched several youtube videos and its not in there.
I am including pictures of the part.
In the pictures youll see the orange handle magnet tool I ran between the engine.
One other q uestion I have is about the cam chain. If im holding the chain up tight should it slip when I turn the engine over by 17mm bolt under timing cover?
Than you

Wow. That engine is pretty whoopped up! Those are higher compression aftermarket pistons.
That part is the cam chain guide that sits in the cylinder block to the front of engine. Directly across from ther chain adjuster boss. It is held in place with a 6mm thread phillips head screw.
Who ever built that engine did not put any lock tight agent on that screw. Thats why alot of guys strip that phillips screw trying to take it out.
So there is also a screw in the bottom. Unless that bracket broke? Is the little 6mm hole intact or lock cracked, broke in half? Opposite side of your picture?
Take that engine out and dismantle it!

Thanks for your response. I was trying to decide if i was going to dismantle the rest of the engine.
I guess I have my awnser.
How do you know those are aftermarket pistons and not stock? How do I know what rings to get for it if its not stock?
Thanks again for your help!

extended dome on top of piston...the dome is used to raise compression.
stock pistons dont have dome. (see pic below)
