Cam Timing Problem!!!!

1980 Z1 classic 14,000 miles with working FI. Recently installed new pistons and rings, and dyna 3ohm coils and wires, removed resistor, installed pogue adjustable fpr. Valve job done by reputable local shop. Put it all back together. Motor starts up immediately, but seems to be out of time with intermittent backfire through throttle bodies and then dies. All plugs are black, cannot get a consistent idle. Followed the directions step by step several times, exhaust mark => aligned with head surface, counted 28 pins from next link pin, the intake mark is aligned with valve surface. Intake looks about 1 tooth off to me, but I am unsure. If I go back one tooth the gear marks on the intake will not be inline. All pics taken at TDC 1/4. I know this has been covered but I still need more clarification

Are thoose factory timming lines on cam sprockets or did you line up cam timming (T-1-4) and self scribe lines on cam sprockets before taking engine down?

I assume those are the factory lines. I am the second owner and those were the marks present when I removed the cover.

What marks on the lobes? I see some lines on the very ends of the cams.

Tri is taling about deep groove in the cam end 180 deg of lobe. The cam timming looks correct but is it timmed to crankshaft correct.....was picture taken a t-1 4

Could ignition timming be 180 out? Ive heard of that.....point plate installed wrong?

bike has electronic ignition. All pictures were taken at tdc 1/4. bike starts really easy, but runs rough with the back fire through the throttle bodies. When the bike is started it timing mark is place on the F mark. With the timing light firing the f alignment is not constant, it flutters back and forth. Only thing that makes me think I am 1 tooth off on the intake is from other pics the 28th link is more at a 12 o'clock postion

if back firing out of carbs then intake is open to long.....ignition happening while intake valve open

the hole and 4 lines are just where the cam blank was chucked up in a lathe....they mean nothing. the grove in the end of cam is the area im talking about.

Have you checked the valve clearance.....this could be it......need to check them.

So, a valve job was done but were the valve clearances adjusted? Perhaps you have valves with no clearance after the valve job.
