hi mh and everyone else!

happy new year.

thanks for your reply!

i went to see a friend who is a
dedicated motorcycle mechanic.
i played the starting problem video
to him and he asked about the fuel tap.
he suggested that the engine is newish.
it has only done 6,800 miles. he thinks
that the pingel tap has filled the carbs bowels
and created a hydaulic lock to happen.
i've sinced checked the bowels and they were full.
what i did was user error 'doh'. i attempted
to start the bike in the cold. the fuel had gone icy
and i used valvolene fst to stop the icing.
the fuel tap was turn on and off to prime.
as the bike made the terrible start up noises.
i sorted one out with the ape tensioner.
the final noise was a 'hydraulic lock'.
i drained the unused fuel from the 4 bowels and
the start up noise has now gone! :-)
a big lesson learnt. i was spoilt in the
past with a modern bike with fuel injection!

many thanks for your help!

kind regards

angel

Hydraulic Lock, oh boy. That can cause Huge damage. Be careful there Angel.
Do your Carb Float Bowls have a overflow drain tube? That would be a Brass Tube, standing up from the bottom of the float bowl, rising up just above the gasket mating surface. It will connect into the carb drain screw circuit, and then have a hose nipple on the bottom of the bowl. Some of the USA Keihin carbs do not have overflow tubes installed do to emissions laws/ requirements. If your carbs do not have them, you can install them. Check them out and see if they have the overflow tubes. You don't want to do a Hydro Lock, it will destroy your motor. My Boss just destroyed his Snowmobile Motor over New Years, Hydro lock.

 can you turn the engine over by hand using the ignition end crank bolt?
if it will not turn over by hand the cylinders may be full of fuel, you can remove the spark plugs and crank the engine over with the electric starter. fuel will come spewing out of the spark holes. rags over the the holes to catch the fuel and be sure the spark plug boot ends are no where near the fuel soaked rags(fire hazard). if this is what happened you will have to drain the oil as it's gassed up and will hurt bearings in the long run if not changed. you still may have a starter sprag problem from the sound of it.

hi kzr's!

happy new year ya'all!

the start noise is bad, it wasn't a hydraulic lock at all.
i still think it's the starter clutch. what i don't understand is i remove
all of my spark plugs from cleaning and the noise stopped. put the plugs back in
at the metal on metal noise is back.

1) i would like to upload another video on this the forum so that others
can help me identify the problem it please. i won't be the first nor the last to hear this
noise.

*** what video format do i use please, *.mpeg, *.avi, other?

2) has anyone ever written any installation instructions for put these starter clutch in
please? i've searched the forum and i couldn't find one.

many thanks

Instructions are in the workshop manual which you can buy from your dealer and (probably) on ebay. The workshop manual, not to be confused with the tiny owner's manual, covers pretty much everything you will ever need to work on the bike.

Cranking the bike over with the plugs out will give the starter motor/clutch/battery an easier time as the motor will have no compression, so if these items are marginal they may well act normally with the plugs out.

When the new tensioner makes the rattle go away, please be sure to come back on here and let everyone know.

hi motorhead!

yes my cv34 carbs do have overflow
pipes, all fitted, with clips!
no problems there. i've had a blonde
moment and turned the pingel on
more than once. hence the unused fuel.
i've now drained off the carb bowel
fuel.

i don't have any help with the starter clutch.
i can't work underneath the sump, due to neck
injury. i've contacted two brit bike shops.
one quoted a 4 hour job, the other 2 hours.
£60 brit pounds for labour and i buy my
own parts. makes my life easier!
i'm injured guys, shunted by white van
builder van!

thanks again!

regards

hi

thank you for your question!

yes the starter motor has been tested,
good instant torque. on this forum
there is a pdf file about installing the
starter clutch. the clue is in the sound
my bike makes on startup. it sounds
like a model t ford horn........

i've got my bike booked in.
sadly i can't do this job. lasses
don't have the same strength as you guys!
we make good meals though, right!

regards and thanks!
