KZ305 wont start randomly :( was created by Zachs305
Recently I went outside to take a ride and my bike wouldnt start. I bought this bike just a few weeks ago and have never had any problems starting it but have noticed a sight bogg at higher RPM's. I got it started for a sec and it wouldnt accept any throttle. I found out that my petcock was malfuctioning so I decided to make sure the carb was full by looking to c if the fuel filter was full but still no start. I wanted to see if it was my starter so I tried to push start it and it turns over for a breif second but wont sustain itself. I have taken the carb apart to see if it was dirty but havnt noticed anything. Tomorrow I am going to go into it and try and clean all the jets out. My brother suggests I take a look at the points, and the spark plug cables but I have no idea about points and want to try the inexpensive fixes first. Ive exhausted myself and am in dire need of some more advise. Please HELP
Zach

Did you ever replace the regulator that the previous owner (idiot) removed? Ed

It turned out that they didn't bypass it, the wires were just dead and I got that fixed luckily.

Assure the rubber plug is properly fitted.

I tore apart the carb and cleaned all the passage ways. Seemed to check ok to me but still no luck. Im not sure that Im getting any spark now so I am going to try replacing my spark plugs. Does anyone know whether or not it could be the "points" or can anyone explain the points system to me? My last idea is Im going to check the battery to see if its going bad but I cant rationalize how the battery being bad could cause the bike to run poorly at high RPM's unless the carb was gunky and the batter is bad and its a culmination of the two. If I am typing crazy talk let me know. Im not the best mechanic but I can usually get by ok lol.

Patton: Thank you I am going to have to be sure and check those passage ways, Im not sure that I checked them correctly

If needed, a free downloadable service manual is referenced in the following link:

Does anyone think it could be my ignition coils? Does anyone know how to check?

With a good fully charged battery properly installed and connected, could remove both spark plugs from their holes in the engine head, leave the plug wires from the ignition coils connected to the spark plugs, hold the bases of the spark plugs grounded against the engine head, and then spin over the engine as if attempting to start it running, and while spinning over the engine, observe the tips of the spark plugs to determine spark quality -- look for strong blue spark, and not weak orange spark.

If there's no spark from either plug, would try this test again, using brand new spark plugs of the type specified in the factory service manual.

May ohm-test the primary winding on each ignition coil.
The resistance, measured in ohms, using an ohmmeter, should fall within factory specs.

If the primary wiring inside the coil is shorted, the ohm test may reveal a broken circuit.

But passing the ohm test doesn't guarantee that the coil isn't shorting internally after it heats up.

Kawasaki dealer service technicians may have available an "electrotester" which measures the spark producing capability of an ignition coil.

There are many reasons other than a faulty coil than can cause spark failure at the tips of the spark plugs.

Good Fortune! :)

From what I understand, the correct procedure is as follows(roughly translated from the audel automobile guide, copywright 1972- ignition distributor picture page 42);
1-take off the distributor cap
2-mark the spark plug wires
3-take off the distributor rotor
4-turn engine to see if points are opening and closing properly
5-if the points are opening and closing properly follow a, if they are malfunctioning follow b
6a-check the wiring and electrical 6b-replace points and gap to spec
7a-try again 7b-try again
8a-when started drink a beer and wait an hour before taking it on the road
8b-when started drink a cold beer and wait 1 hour before going on the open road. a job weld done.
