I am having a similar sound coming from my 1980 kz1000 ST. I can not determine if it is the neutral balls or the output shaft bearings?
Do the Nuetral BB spin in the case?

For us, it was neither. It was the nut rotating loose in the housing with a bit of the output shaft in it.
I doubt the neutral finder BB's will make that much noise that you would hear them.
