I didn't want to hijack the other thread so moved it to here.

Incidently, we've been puzzled by a strange sound in the trans. With the bike on the centerstand, when we rotate the rear wheel, there is a clicking sound in the trans. It's pretty quiet, but definitely there. The sound doesn't sound bad like anything broken, just strange. I was wondering if you had the same sound.

I've never heard it on any chain drive KZ's.

Uh oh. That looks like what the sound sounds like. At first I was thinking the sound was something to do with the neutral finder because it does sound like little ball bearings falling into place.

We'll have to see if we can yank the right-angle drive.
Thanks Leon.

lou i have pics from two different engines that the same thing happened to.

on my 80 z1r when i was doing my swingarm conversion i first heard it while sitting down by the left side of the engine and mindlessly spinning the outputshaft with my fingers.you could go slow and hear the balls drop over the top one at a time.
also when i would throttle it hard leaving a stop light it would kinda pop and jerk around, enough to make you quit what you were doing for fear of blowing"something" apart.

you have to split the cases to change it.

that is the biggest sucky part, otherwise pretty straight forward.

i got the bearing from ape.

Oh that sucks. My buddy just got the motor back in and running.

I wonder if the shaft drive setup is different.

Notice bearing #22 rides on the bevel drive shaft which connects to the output shaft of the trans. I wonder if it's that one, or is it #33 on the trans fiche? I think that is the one you are describing.

lou,
i am describing #33 the one with the circlip groove machined in it.
they crack through the groove and out the side which pops the cage off which lets the balls start touching each other because the cage is no longer separating them.

Well, it appears the output shaft (#18) of the trans broke off right at the nut (#26). The threaded part of the shaft is still inside the nut. The nut was loose and making the noise.

In search of trans output shaft 13128-1019. Found on 79 E1 and 80 E2.

Wow. I sure as hell don't want to hear a clickity click sound in my transmission. I'll check it out on Saturday as promised in previous thread. The manual I ordered should hopefully be in by tomorrow or Saturday. Let me know if you want me to look anything up and possibly scan post a page or two.

Edit: Bummer, just read your last post. At least you know what is needed.

Thanks VirginiaKZ. Hopefully splitting the cases is straight forward. I think he's still looking a for a manual.

Leon, yeah, it's a head scratcher. Unfortunately, when you get a new used bike, there will often be goofy mysteries like this. I'm not even sure what to look for as a cause. Maybe something will show up when splitting the cases.

Thanks, Motorhead. We've been watching that NOS shaft on ebay, but I think he has a line on a used trans for much cheaper. But you never know with used stuff.
