I spent far too much time bead blasting a cover from my turbo bike only to find the issue first hand...
Ahhhhh, D'oh!!! That sucks.
I reckon I can grab a new top idler if I decide to do this.
I've got an '80 LTD that I would like to clone into a '76 for some reason. :silly:
I really just like the looks of the early cam covers.
Why not use a 1000a cover ?
They have the round styling and take the later idler.
You can always polish out the half moon casting on the end to mimic the the very early cover.
I just went and looked at my cover. It appears to be a 1000a cover with the raised section in the center, so I can use my late model(1980) idler, correct?

If concerned with clearance Mock it up with clay on top of idler to check it.

Have so far been unsuccessful in locating the KZr forum thread where that pic was posted as an example of tapping the clean air ports in the head and inserting a screw to serve as a plug.
Here's another thread dealing with the subject of plugging the ports in the head.

Yes
It's only the very early z1 Covers that need the early idlers.
The early covers have a more flat sided raised section with no added 'bump' either side.
The later 900 and 1000 covers have those added 'bumps' and even though there are a few different design idlers, They will all fit with the later cover.

Ahh, no clay needed. Looks like I have the right cover for what I'm doing.
