early KZ cam cover on MKII head?? was created by BlackZ1R
I haven't tried this, but was told that the early style Z/KZ 900/1000 cam cover will work on the MKII 1000 head if the smog ports are blocked off.
Just looking at the rocker cover sitting on the head, it looks like it is a go.

Anyone here done this one?

I run the early style on all my bikes. I think there was mentioned a taller cam tower being too tall. If you got it on and the engine is in the frame it will probably work.

If you notice bits of metal in the oil pan it is the Xs on the cam cover being rubbed off. Don't ask how I know.

Or grind them off or use two gaskets.

11/32 drill bit fits the hole pretty good.

once upon a time when i was young(er) and dumb(er) i used .38 special cases coated with jb weld and drove them into the holes for the smog ports :pinch:.

it worked, but i think i could come up with a more elegant solution nowadays.

Smog ports in head will straight tap M10 without having to tap drill and plug with grub screws.
Early camcover will bolt straight on.
Very early cover will need early top idler too.

The top idler assembly on the Mk II is constructed differently than the earlier version. The later valve covers have a bulge around the center section of the cover to accomodate. You cannot use a Z1 cover with that style of top idler assembly.

I spent far too much time bead blasting a cover from my turbo bike only to find the issue first hand...

Ahhhhh, D'oh!!! That sucks.
I reckon I can grab a new top idler if I decide to do this.
I've got an '80 LTD that I would like to clone into a '76 for some reason. :silly:
I really just like the looks of the early cam covers. :cheer:

Have so far been unsuccessful in locating the KZr forum thread where that pic was posted as an example of tapping the clean air ports in the head and inserting a screw to serve as a plug.

Here's another thread dealing with the subject of plugging the ports in the head.

Why not use a 1000a cover ?
They have the round styling and take the later idler.
You can always polish out the half moon casting on the end to mimic the the very early cover.

Could anyone post a picture of the two idler assemblies? Roy
