Theoretical question at this point: but what goes into turning a KZ900 into a KZ1000 (1015 or 1075?) I know the 1015 "drops in" with the KZ1000 pistons and block, but what else would need to go into such a swap.

I still have the stock cam chain tensioner so I'd throw an APE one in, what else should I do? I like to line my ducks up in a row before I shoot them haha. Right now I'm rocking a Kerker with a street baffle- if I went to a 1015, I'd probably punch it out to a comp baffle. Also, I'd swap the VM26s for VM28s or maybe CR29s.

Bear in mind this is my daily driver. Yes, I try to ride it every day.

Speed costs money, how much you got to spend ? Ported head, dropin cams 395/260/260, Id go with the 10.25 pistons. Bear in mind that you have to do it because you love the bikes. Its cheaper to buy a bike with more power then to build one. For 2 grand you can buy a ZRX 11 or 12 or a 1200 Bandit with the same or more HP and it will handle better. My KZ900 was sleeved to 1105 34 years ago along with the other mods and its still going strong with 29mm smoothbores on it. You can get a set now for your first born child. I saw a 2008 Zx14 w/7000 miles Saturday for 5 grand, but its not OP friendly

Exactly, speed costs money. This is my daily driver, not a project bike, so I'm just looking for a little extra oomph, not porting the head, "stump pulling cams," probably not even CR29s.

The ZRX-11/12s have my eye though. I REALLY like the new Z1000 (Not the Ninja 1000), but I don't know if I'd want to purchase a brand new bike, but prices are coming down for last years's model.

I really like my 1075. When I first got it I had a stock 1000cc bike and the diffrence was amazing.

Oh nice! Did you keep the stock cams and VM26s? Did you do any other modifications/upgrades other than boring the sleeves? Oil cooler? What grade gas do you run, premium?

My 1075 had andrews 3X cams. I originally had 29 smothbores.

I have run 26's,28's and 34's. I will have this engine installed next week and I will be running 34's.

I will have a hand ported head. I just cleaned the casting flaws.

I did run a oil cooler for several years but I removed it three or four years ago.

I ran hi-test gasoline. Roy

If you are'n't going to do anything to the top end, don't bother going any bigger. you will get about 8-10 HP at best even with the 1075.

trying to install the 1015cc cylinder block on a KZ900 may not work without relieving the cases a little to get the larger sleeves to go into the cases. I know on a few cases you don't have to do this, but most you do.

a lot of help here to redo a classic......you can spend a lot of cash to build up a 35 year old classic and have a cool looking bike to show people at different venues.......sell it and take a huge haircut unless its a desireable model......or, on the other side, buy something a little more modern, save some cash and aggravation, spend more time riding than wrenching, and be a little further ahead.......then there is always the issue of learning and comraderie VS riding every weekend problem free......a lot of thinking to do........

Alrighty, looks like I'm going to need a project bike. My "internally stock" KZ900 runs like a champ and is 100% reliable and I wouldn't want to risk compromising it at all.

Anyone and their 16-year old brother can go out and buy a ZRX, ZX, GSX, Katana, Ninja, blah, blah, blah. Not anyone can build a 35-year old bike the exact way they want to.

I am extremely biased, but I think Z1's are simply one of the most beautiful bikes on the Earth. Not too flashy, not ugly, not "sharp," everything just seems to look good about these bikes. If I did a 1075 kit, I'd do it the right way: porting, cams, smoothies, Yosh pipe ;), Lesters, the works. Guess I'll save my $ for a project bike for now.

That sounds like the way to go. Something retro/beefy about the looks of a 1973-1980 Z bike. They have aged very well.
