Possible bent valve?
25 Mar 2011 01:07
Me and my dad where going through checking valve clearances on the csr 1000. We where using the motion pro tool and we came up with .003 it was a little tight so we put a slightly smaller shim in. When I removed the tool from under the cam and the bucket did not come all the way back up. now theres about a 1/16" gap.
Is it possible that the motion pro tool caused a piston to valve contact bending the valve and now it wont close all the way?

it would be pretty tough to get enough leverage with that short little tool to bend a valve i would think anyway, will the bucket spin?
did you spin motor over through a hard spot? dont turn motor over with that bucket stuck down .
i wonder if the bucket got stuck in some carbon or something?

I think the tool couldn't possibly have enough leverage to bend a valve using it. However, if you had the "wedge" in place between the camshaft and the top of the bucket and turned the crankshaft using a wrench you might bend a valve.

possibly you burred/dinged the edge of the bucket bore with the tool and it is hung on the burr.

Leon...........

Concept I was going after was to see if filling the chamber with air would possibly blow any pariculates/matter up and out....
Also with testing the other chambers/valves, requires 180 rotations of the crankshaft.... Wtih some engine pre-lube or lubricants in the valve springs and such, might be able to see where and why it's sticking open...
Just a thought, no biggy....

Good thought Leon.
can u reinsert the shim tol to lower the bucket and check? or use another lever to push the bucket down? make sure the piston is not near tdc though.

Well! Dad turned the number one piston through the valve. Bending it, and cracking the guide. After a few hours of tolling we had the guy at the local shop find a guide and put it in for us.
So thats why the bucket wouldn't close all the way! All is well now and the engine is timed, shimmed, and back together. Just gotta reinstall carbs, exhaust, coils, wires, and tank. OH and change the oil. Shame its going to snow tomorrow.

Live and learn right? It was a learning experience. The engine is fresh once again with new rings a good hone, 3 angle valve job. New valve seals. Can't wait to fire it up!
