how to install new gaskets

I pack the channel behind the rubber grommet absolutely solid with 1104/1194 goo... I usually do this little-by-little over several days as the goo shrinks when it dries.
Before I do this, I clean all the wires, the channel and grommet as thoroughly as possible.
Agreed. These can be a big PITA.

Do you guys typically run some Yamabond/1104/1194/etc. along the bottom half of the stator gasket to assist with the seal, or does it just tend to be the grommet that causes the leak if things are cleaned up and prepped properly?

I dry fit everything first, checking gap with a 002" feeler guage. If its all OK, then i go ahead and wipe everything down with acetone/brake cleaner/oil free thinner/etc.
I like to put the stuff on my finger first, then just tack it lightly along both mating surfaces till its pretty thin and even with small peaks everywhere.
Never had a leak after this process.
Removal is fine, and I can often just reuse whats there with a quick smear of grease on the old goo, then re-assemble.
Good luck.

Yup, mine is dripping, as is typical. They put a ton of goo in there, but I think the grommet is the original on the bike and it still drips.

Mostly gromet - I've had a very small intermittant drip through the actual wire holes, that every season seems to need a quick cleanup and re-goo. PITA.
If you want to use goo - remember, sparingly! Just a thin tacky film is erally all thats needed.

BTW, my favorite scraper is from Goodson - their Super Scraper. I was talking with them at the recent DealerExpo in Indy - they are going to release a narrower version for the motorcycle industry later this year. This is one of those MUST HAVE parts...

They are a good company to buy direct from. I've bought a couple of times for my own toolbox.

I didn't see any mention of a brillo pad for gasket cleanup? I like it much better than hand scraping if room allows for a die grinder in there.
Amen to that. Red scotchbrite on a right angle die grinder.

That gasket sealant on the valve cover was a PITA and removing it all the next time I have to get in there is going to be worse.
