Not positive on the procedure for the 550's but I believe that you set the cam timing without the tensioner, and then install/adjust the tensioner after the camshafts are bolted down.

Here's a pic. Can't see the markings, but you can see position of cams.

EDIT:.. sorry, pic too big and won't down load.

That was the first way I tried it. When it didn't work, I thought I did it wrong so I put the tensioner in. I'll take it out tonight and check it again.

Perhaps could edit pic size and re-post.

I use MS Paint program to re-size, but there are many other good re-sizing programs also readily available.

KZr pic size limits:
Width: 2400px
Height: 1200px
2048kb (2 MB)

Am meanwhile looking for loudhvx's KZ550 site which has excellent advice about cam installation.

Good Fortune! :)

Could the tach drive gear be binding on the exhaust cam? I'm grasping at straws here. In any case, just pull the tach drive gear to rule that out.

I didn't have the tack gear in at that time. Good try though!

Good Fortune! :)

Great links, Patton, thanks. I did see one thing that looks suspect. There was an error, according to your link, that showed in the Clymer manual where the mark should be at pin 1 but is on pin 0 instead on the exhaust cam. Is that enough to not allow it to turn more than half a crank? But it turns fine in the opposite direction, so why is that you think?

Another angle.

Darn, forgot to resize it.

Can't resize with what I got on my work computer, so it's in the link.
