you will need to drill and tap the hole to use the helicoil or the timesert, so you will get chips in the cylinder you will need to get out.

I was thinking about this too. Is there any way to do this while the head is still on the motor?? I was thinking of something like turning the motor to TDC when both valves are open and hooking a shop vac to the exhaust side with the header and carbs off. Think that would work?? I don't need to do this but just for future reference.

If I were going to try drilling and tapping it without pulling the head I would use a strong shop vac and hold the nozzle close as you drill and tap. Then flush out with a solvent (WD40) and compressed air. You should be able to get most of the chips out and the rest will blow out when start the engine! A little momentary AL dust won't hurt anything. I would also go with the Helicoil type because you remove less material. I would use some Loctite and remove the excess Loctite from the threads and let it dry before installing the spark plug for fear of sticking the heli-coil to the spark plug. Put anti seize on the plug threads so the insert stays in the head when you remove the plug. Should work if done properly. Let us know.

The inaugural use of my new torque wrenches will be to torque down new sparkplugs. What's the torque spec for these? '76 KZ900 if it matters.

Thanks!

If you happen to lose some debris into the cylinder, a length of carb vac hose held in the shop vac intake, can then be inserted through the plug hole and twisted around in the cylinder to suck up anything.

Works quite well.

Of course, AND I used elbow grease to lube the threads. I figured real grease would "carbonize" and make a mess of things. ;)
