Exhaust valve color analysis? was created by 79MKII
I am currently experimenting by trying out different exhaust systems and I just noticed that my number 1 exhaust valve looks really different than the other three. Should I be worried?

The other 3 valves are dry and flat black looking - looks like a typical carbon coating from an exhaust. The #1 ex valve is super shiny black and looks wet. All around the #1 exhaust port is the same. I touched it and it's not wet - it actually feels sticky, kind of like syrup.

Does that color indicate an issue with the #1 cylinder? The rebuild only has around 600 miles on it with ALL new parts. Anyone ever see this?

Thanks

Syrup?

Hmmm, where's Larry when you need him.....

Assuming compression tests and leak down tests within specifications, have you been using any kind of additive (fuel or oil) or any crap other then oil?

Possibly a seal deterioration but doubtful... sticky...

Spark Plug sticky as well then?

Possibly something coming from the carb.... Intake manifold have the same sticky crap present?

Open carb bowl, have sticky black crap in it?

Beats the hell out of me....

I would guess either a vavle stem oil seal has been miss-installed, or the valve guide was worn beyond service. Also could be that the 3 piece oil rings expander does not have the ends "Butted".

I haven't had the chance to check anything else yet except the exhaust. All 4 pipes on the exhaust look the same - black carbon - flat black and dry looking. Maybe the black stuff is left over from before I synched the carbs? Then again, that was about 500 miles ago. I reused the exh gaskets since I was just trying out another exhaust - maybe a bad exh leak had something to do with it? I could hear that they were leaking a bit but didn't pay attention to which cylinder(s).

I'll check the plugs for sure and maybe the intakes if I have a chance. I'll try to post some pictures too. Never really seen anything like it.

Is cylinder #1 firing correctly at idle?
Can be tested by misting water on exhaust pipes to see if it vaporises after a minute of idling.
Seen this before when cylinder was just blowing some fuel/air mixture through but not ignighting due to bad sync/mix screw setting.

  That is so funny! I do drive myself crazy sometimes (it's a short drive anyway). I almost didn't even post it but just couldn't help myself.

Now that you mentioned it, I noticed a little puff of smoke at start up lately. Would that indicate a leaky valve seal? Everything was new 600 miles ago - valves, valve seats, seals, guides, springs, lifters, everything.

Yea, good winter project. ;)

sounds like a guide seal to me,when the motor sits any period of time the oil runs down paste the seal into the port or combustion chamber to burn off when you start it
oh yeah i almost forgot omr just signed a 5 year $25 deal with mothers plug electrode shine, commercial should be coming out soon! :woohoo:

Yea, new pistons, rings and a fresh bore too. Maybe the ring gaps lined up? I think I'll take Plummens advice and wait till winter. It's running excellent - I would have never known if I didn't get the bright idea to "check things out". I'd just like to learn what type of things could cause a condition like that. Seems like burned oil maybe?

Oh, no additives or anything in the gas - just super unleaded. It's weird that all 4 exhaust match each other isn't it? Why would it be different in the head - it's only about a half inch away.
