Anybody degree in there stock cams on kz900/1000 engines? Just curious the effects. I have heard many degree in there stock cams to 105 centerline to give more bottom end torque. Would like to hear others experiences.

If you look at the service length specs for the cam chains, then do some math on that, it comes out to roughly 3-4 degrees behind the crank on exhaust, and 6-7 degrees on intake if my calculation is correct.

Those are fairly staggering numbers - esp. when you consider the drag racers are trying to get within fractions of a degree accuracy.

If you ever get a tired old high mileage Z1/KZ, just replacing the cam chain will perk the bike up a fair amount.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm actually more interested in weather it is worth changing the lobe center from the stock 110 degrees to say 105 degrees.

I think there is a couple of recent posts about that, but do you realize the cost of adjustable gears for your cams? Then how much you will gain? If you really want a change maybe it would be better to select a different cam?
Just some suggestions.

You don't need to buy new cam gears. You just have to take a rat tail file and enlarge the holes in either direction. It doesn't take much only like an eighth of an inch.

oppie501: Years ago just for giggles, I removed the degreed Yosh R & T cams from my Z1 and replaced them with the stock cams at 102 intake and exhaust centers. As expected, the low-end was nice, making second gear almost the choice from a stop sign take off. Top end power faded before 8,500 however.

Back went in the Yosh R&T cams at 108 intake and exhaust lobe centers for great low end and top end fun.

Been following this and I just can't see what you'd truly gain here without performance cam upgrade degreed to their design/specifications...

Due to cam lobe heights and overlaps, a couple degrees one way or the other, what are you truly gaining...

It's not like it's going to rip you off the seat but for those true motor heads who have tried this.... A little hp increase, a tad more torque on the bottom end....what?

Hell, outside of performance cams, I would think a head job, +1 up on the valves, Port & polish would accomplish more...

Ok, through in the 29-31mm CR carbies....

Oh yeah, Kerker w/1.5" baffle...

Ah hell with it, throw in the performance cam now you've gone this far....

Now you're talkin....

well if youve got a solid older motor you dont want to tear into you might be suprised what a good stiff tune up and cams opening at the right time will do at a stoplight, toss a good header and a set of carbs on there and youve got a fun little daily rider.
some of us have been around long enough to remember how quickly a basically stock motored bike in the right hands can suprise the shit out of a less experianced shmuck on a better bike next to them on the right day,now go back to buffing your spark plugs! :woohoo:

Still recovering, some days are better than others.
