Well I just dropped the pan on my 82 KZ1000 LTD, found something I don't recognize, and it almost looks like a pull tab from a can. Of course it is not, and it is much harder metal, Non magnetic, Looks bent and broken like it used to have 2 loops maybe? Its got me worried as I want to ride it on a 3000mi round trip.
Now it has 26000mi, and I've done the top end and cam chain, bike runs sweet and shifts perfect. The only noises are from the Starter, cranks up easy but has a growl. Pulled and checked it, lubed etc still the same. Also has what I would describe as a "DRY" sounding bearing in the transmission, more apparent in 4-5 gears, that's why I pulled the pan.

Could it be a old master link from a cam chain? Do you have a picture?

Sure does look like a tossed beer can tab

Is it magnetic?

Can't think of anything that would look like that. On a J you can pull the clutch basket without splitting the cases. Might be worth your while to have a look there as well.

Here's a pic of crank and trans

+1, maybe the PO liked to have a few sips while he worked? Doesn't look like anything recognizable from the engine to me though

Is it magnetic?

You said that it's non-magnetic, so that would almost certainly make it aluminum. So it's not a master link (which couldn't get into the pan anyway). Also looks vaguely like crushed tubing, or maybe a part of a shifter cog??? Does it shift well?

Well... good thing you got it out! Put her back together with fresh oil & filter and "call it good"!

Sounds like she's running sweet, "If it's not broke, don't fix it"!!!

Not Magnetic, and as I said looks like a pull for a can, but it is not. Aluminum most likely. I've never had the trans apart on a J, but on many other bikes/ cars/ equipment, nothing like this. I suppose it could have gotten there by a Human Hand besides its engineer. I'll pull the clutch, and the stator and look around. Better safe than sorry, might just split it and search for any thing worn. As I said shifts fine runs good and just a growl from the starter when engaged that sounds abnormal, starter looks good inside with sort brushes, on my shopping list, and what I describe as a "DRY BEARING" sound from the trans.
Going to post up a couple or more pics in a bit.

Maybe it's a pull tab from a can of oil additive.
