Thanks ... as soon as I can get some help over here I'll take the sprocket off and try to get the cover off that's behind it. How much oil should I expect to see come out of that baby? a lot? ... a little? I hope the screws come off without stripping the heads ... OH My! I guess I'm jumping in with both feet!

you shouldn't get much oil out of it look at the level of your oil window it won't come up past there. just put a small pan under you will be fine give it a go.

OK now!... My buddy came over this morning after we went fishing and he stood on the brake while I used a three foot breaker bar to get the sprocket nut off. Piece of cake. I checked all nine screws on the cover plate, and they all broke loose without any problems. I didn't take the plate off yet but tomorrow I'll get to that. I got a hillbilly wine fest to attend tonite. :woohoo:

dblhdr,
Does anyone know if the shaft from a 78 KZ650 is the same as your 1000 (my Kawasaki.com parts cross reference skill sucks). I have a locked up 650 I would take the shaft out of and it's yours. PM me if you want it.

Just a thought like Patmann mentioned, could the end be welded back on in the bolt groove? Only the area where the bolt goes thru uses the groove area. You would need to mark the area of the bolt before you remove the shaft and the splines would need to be in line before welding. Any weld above the root of the spline could be ground or filed down to clear the shifter.

Never been there, done that, never needed to (thank goodness) just exploring options. Replacement being the best.
Good Luck,
Jim

The part number cross ref. seems pretty clear. I haven't tried ordering the part yet from either of the sources I've found, If they can't get it for me I guess I'll go begging and brain storming.
The hillbilly wine fest turned out to be a real hoot-n-nanny.
Had a great time listening to a pick up garage band that rocked the house down all day.

Here is a picture with the cover off and the offensive broken part that needs to be changed,
Can anyone tell me if this is under some preload or not, does the spring (#20 in the above drawing) come out with the shaft mechinism? does it just pull straight out? :side:

just spread the two fingers that go over the shift drum so they clear it and pull it straight out.
