I have never heard of that before. Every one I have spoken with advises against putting a link in the chain. I am not sure of that advice. Split the cases, get the crank checked out even have it done nice, gears second gears get a beating and billet gears although expensive make the bottom end something you will never have to worry about and if later you go crazy you won't worry about the bottom end, and this is the perfect time to powder coat the cases and block. I had mine powdercoated and they look suweeeeeet! I know it's a lot of money but it is what it is.Motor Head wrote:

Cam chain a good Idea, but you don't have to remove the motor and split the cases. They make Master links for a reason. I did all my own head work, and rings/ honing/ cam chain etc. All in frame, and an 82 1000 4 cyl. New valves for the exhaust was the most expensive, $27 each.

My bottom end was solid and no work was needed on the tranny so I didn't touch it. Maybe once everything is broken in next yr i will tear it down again it was a lot of fun!
I left the cams stock but replaced the bearings and put in a new heavy duty chain. The head was rebuilt back to stock. Other then the bore and new 1045 pistons it's all stock. This is a daily driver for now.

It is alive! Everything went together well fired it up this morning and it sounds sweet. Man all that fresh compression sure makes kicking it tough haha. A few issues though. Need new batter :( and I have a small oil weep on cyl 1 between the rubber keeper and the gasket. Maybe I should have changed the keepers hopefully it's not pressure pining it out.
As well I get a back fire sometimes when I kick it coul be old fuel?

Yeah it was great to hear it fire and not blow up haha. However I am concerned about the oil weeping out of the cam end plug. Cyl 1 is the problem. The oil seems to be leaking out between the gasket and plug. I'm going to try taking the valve cover off and adding some silicone since the head was blasted. Then order new cam plugs and gasket.
Should I be concerned about anything bigger being the issue? Everything int the top end is brand new. I'd like to take it for a rip :)

If not already done, would verify/adjust ignition timing using strobe light, and also assure proper function of the advancer, watching it quickly move back and forth as rpm is varied by blipping throttle. Advancer may need lube and/or clean and lube.

Good Fortune! :)

I like to hear how the rebiuld was a success! I don'
t however like the to hear the amount of money alot of people have to pay others for work done. MY GOSH! With familys to feed and house etc, this is just ridiculous. Talk about a total rip off, and one doesn't even get the whole rebuild! I do understand different locations have diff prices by far but it's ALL a ripoff. I truley feel bad for u guys that had to line someones pockets to the hilt for work done. Not to be comparative in a statistical sense, but I paid 80 for valve work, 100 for boring and the pistons cost 400 at the time. The assembler should know to put a sealer on the cam plugs. It's a minor oversight really but.... for the price some memory may have been lost (least not the important stuff that matters) Anyway it sounds like u had organized well at the start and I commend you for that :) Next time it will probably be you that's going to be the go to guy. And that is what you paid for, good job on that one too! Hope that bike rocks your brains out, just not litterally! Drive safe, keep eyes open, your gonna have to recalibrate now since it's faster :woohoo:

Thanks for jacking my thread with your juvenile bs. I posted and update to say thanks for the help an you two decide to start a pissing war about your opinions on my build. Sod off I don't give a crap what you think.
This was my first major build which I did 100% myself other then parts and machine work. Yes it cost me more money then expected but so what. I have a great bike and mechanic if I need him. Next time just say good job and shut up.
