Ok, easy way to confirm the sending units operation...

* Engine off, electrical off.
* Unbolt the sending unit from the engine case.
* If you look up inside the unit, you'll see the spring loaded/plunger for switch switch activation.
* Turn the key to on position but don't start the engine!
* Either lay the the sending unit on the engine case or use a jumper thus grounding the sending unit.

* With the spring/plunger not engaged due to no pressure, the spring/plunger will be fully extended thus grounded and your oil lamp should be ON.

* Press the spring up towards the switch spring/plunger thus simulating oil pressure, compressing the spring/plunger thus infinite continuity. The oil pressure lamp should turn off.

You can follow this and perform continuity measurements as well if your more comfortable not applying power.

Can't get any easier then that...

If sending unit/switch/lamp is working then you have low pressure/oil flow blockage or bearing wears occurring...

Thanks for all the responces to my post. The switch is working and no oil gets to the oil path so a pressure check would be of no help. I have heard that the oil pumps on kz900 were weak that the pumps on the 1000 and GPZ 1100 are better, so I think the oil pump is the problem .

Thanks for your reply ,you are on target with the oil pump. The oil level is good and I hope to have a used oil pump and o-rings at home in the mail. I will close the side clearences up on the oil pump I have ordered by putting a thiner gasket on it of by sanding the housing down on a flat surface . Thanks for you help
