no oil flow on my kz900 was created by oneownerkz900
This bike is my baby, owned her from the start. Stock motor only changes is the 4 into 2 pipes dyna ign.and seat.started having oil light problems last year. would take off fast and the light came on and would not go off. let it cool down and started it up and light went out. this happened one time last year but it seemed like the motor was running warm and slowed down at idle at stop lights. coils and ign cooked and replaced them this year now the bike oil light came on again after my first ride of the season and would not go off. pull the oil plug on the right side of the motor and started it up and no oil came out. checked the oil pump clearances and they were with in .004 of an inch. oil path is clean and not blockages iam lost as what to do help please.

Best to remove the oil pressure switch and screw in a gauge to check oil pressure for real. You could have a defective switch or a wire shorting to ground, as this will turn on the light. Low oil pressure means its toast and will require a rebuild and new oil pump. What weight oil and brand are you running? This will effect oil pressure when hot if to thin.

the key here is the fact that he has pulled the plug on the side of the motor.....all electrical BS aside, it should be squirting oil......the only thing i can think of is a bad pump or a blockage....or no oil......was the pump replaced with a new oring installed flat side down?..was the pump primed?.....does it have the "gate mod"?.....these are very simple oiling systems that run at a low psi.....i would run it for about 10 seconds with the plug removed (not just cranking) and see what comes out ...after verifying oil level is full......good luck.....keith

Not sure about that Ron for as depicted in the technical screeny, the Bypass valve only bypasses the oil filter, the rest of the flow should be the same....

One thing I'd be confirming that oil indeed is reaching up top (cams)!

Could be that the oil sending unit is acting up as well...

Good luck...

Im having a similar problem. Mine is only when I take off fast and then the light goes out after a few seconds. I assumed I needed the "gate mod". I experimented by running the bike up to 8-9k in 4th gear rolling into the throttle slowly and the light never once came on. Only in 1st and 2nd when I hammer the throttle.

Just curious... oil levels correct, within spec?

If low, this could also cause the intermittent on/off lamp lighting during a hard twist and such....

Just a thought...

I have been checking the oil a lot because I've been paranoid about it. My bike does smoke some on start up and has a small leak around the shifter. A few drops after a ride. I've been hesitant to fix much because I have plans to tear the whole engine down soon. I don;t believe I've ever let the oil level get out of spec though.
