Honestly though, if I pull the head apart and get it baking soda cleaned then put the valves back into the same hole, how would the seats be damaged?

as for checking contact area or patteren you can check that wih a simple black marker or machinist dye. most replacement exhaust valves come with a hard stellite coating on them that is only a few thou thick why start the wear process before you ever fire up the bike.

I lap my valves if they require it, but for the most part after a good cut/grind, it isn't.
Problem is, for years I have taken heads to several different shops around my area, and no matter who I went to, not all of thier work was "perfect".
We don't all have the equipment/ability to cut/grind our own valves/seats.
Wish I did though...
People just hurry when its not thier %$#&!

JUST PUT'EM IN THERE AND LET THEM POUND THIER WAY IN! :woohoo:

any time you blast any type of media on something, its gonna change it some, maybe not much and lapping the valves in will prob seat them right back in,, but heres my point, how long did the person stay in one spot, was the air up higher today, there are a lot of varibles that could change the metal.

Several misconceptions here. Blasting the seats, then relapping them is a common practice and presents no problems provided you use the correct media. If the seat won't lap in after blasting, it wouldn't have lapped in before.
The soda blasting is very good as the media is easier to get out of the head.
If any of you have their heads blasted, then find an automatic transmission shop that rebuilds transmissions in house and have them wash your cylinder in their high pressure washing machine. They do an amazing job of getting the media out.
We lap new valve jobs with extremely fine compound. Only to see where the 45 comes in on the valve face, and to make sure there is the perfect gray ring on the seats.

I picked up an old Braun espresso maker at Goodwill for a couple bucks. It was missing everything but the main cooker part, but that's okay because I had no plans to actually make espresso with it. I cut the steam nozzle attachment and spliced in a length of heavy duty hose.

No worries, it all cleans up with SOS pads and a little elbow grease!
Still, though, it makes me glad I'm a bachelor...
