Any idea what this is? Its aluminum and is broken on the sides, It seems to have a gasket like material on it. Is this broken clutch?

The motor is a 73 z1.

could you post a clearer pic...it would be hard for a broken friction plate to travel down to the pan i think....clearer pics would help...it does look like the edges are part of a disk shape and the material seems to match what a friction disk in your clutch looks like..

I'd pull the clutch cover off and do an inspection myself.

I cropped and tried to adjust the image some so it would help. Are those by chance broken ears off the clutch basket?

I'm gonna say that this is part of a friction disk. I would definantly pull the clutch cover. All it will cost you is one gasket.

Those have the vertical lines of a friction plate but they seem fairly thick for that...

Clutch basket finger, possibly...

yep...that be the clutch bob..final answer...get a gasket and it is a good time to put new friction plate set...and new stock springs..the metal plates that make the other half of the set usualy are good to re-use ,no problem....i prefer heavy duty springs but they can work cables down quicker and some folks don't like the added force they make you use to pull the lever in...but new plates and new stock springs and a gasket and you'll be fine...i shatterd a plate doing a burnout and it felt like i blew my tranny(i was a kid) but it was just one friction plate that broke into little pieces....does your bike seem to still drive...anyway...it may be a p.o who fixed the plates and left you a present in the pan?

it's a couple of pieces of your i would say, inside fiber plates on my drag bike break quite frequently so i'm very used to seeing what your seeing when they break on mine it is always the inside two. not a big problem just replace the broken plates and your ready to go again.

Clutch plate no doubt. I had 5 times that much in my pan once and the clutch still worked fine lol. A quick rebuild and you'll be good to go.
