ok, i will check those things when the motor is back in one piece. i checked for the noise and catching by turning it over manually, and came up with nothing. only is noticeable when the motor is fired up

is the motor together now , or apart?
if apart, u really need to measure everything. rod ends in particular. and piston pin holes .piston to wall. u can measure a valve for bend, by placing it in a v block and set up a dial indicator on the big end, then just rotate the valve. the do the same on the shaft.
u can measure the head to piston clearance with solder. place 2 pieces through the spark plug hole. align each piece over a wrist pin , then turn the piston past tdc to mash the solder.
start with thin solder if can find some around .040" .060".
then u measure the thickness of the flattened solder.
if it does not touch then u have plenty of clearance.
Yes cam chains stretch. hense the adjuster.

...and cam chains will stretch beyond the reach of a stock tensioner...
Gotta love the jack-offs in the shop class...had to deal some bastards like that in tech school, sabotage, theft, taking engines partially apart to check for high-performance vs. stock parts (came in one day to find the cam pulled out of my 350 just far enough to read "GM" on it...)
