with a mix of cruising and stop and go....i m running 15w40 as thats all i can find in rotella/delvac around here...i m going to get some valvoline cycle oil in 10w40 and try that...i was reading somewhere on here that someone ran a thinner as opposed to thicker oil and the thinner helped with temps.....the guage i have probably isnt spot on, but should have me in the 'hood.....i have a small cooler but man, this thing gets hot fast and it doesnt come down....i m thinking over the winter i am going to pull pan, see what kind of trinkets i find in it .. i have a pump i bought a while back off a 9k mile bike that was parted out....i am pretty sure the pan has never been off this bike...any input?......thanks.....

how many miles on the bottom end? I would put the 9000 mile pump in for good insurince. Pulling the pan is always good just to see what the motor is really like.
33k on bottom end..i checked the con-rods for slop before i installed the pistons and pins....seemed pretty decent...no dicernable side to side.....i would feel a lot better knowing that the pump is newer and and the pick-up isnt full of smeg....i have decent oil pressure, but again that guage is a ballpark....losing the steering damper and putting on a bigger cooler might be in the works also.....

Looks like a J motor in your Avatar. I assume that's the bike. Guides were a prone to leaking on those motors and creating carbon build up in the chambers.
Any spark knock?
OMR did a hell of a good post on temps that he shot with his gun. Here's the info.

Just for the sake of it...try pulling the baffle and see what the temps do.

i will definitely pull baffle..i am going to pull megaphone as i put it on a rear stand to give me a little room to get underneath to change oil..i have to lube chain also....i get spark knock at about 190-200 degrees.....not a j motor though....stock 78 motor was there when i got bike....head all redone..new guides and seals....mtc forged pistons...850 miles on top end....i guess 200 isnt really that hot by looking at omr s oil temps....what should these bikes run as an average temp?.....thanks for your input larry........

make sure it's not running lean because that makes it run really hot. Also, check timing advancer since running the timing fast will also make it run hotter.I know the 10.5 to 1 comp is probably the culprit but even at 75 degrees, i m showing 200 degrees after a 30 min ride
