Some folks have mentioned removing everything, then lay the frame/engine over in the grass, then lift the frame off the engine.

I was just going to say this, it's the easiest way to do it by yourself. Use blankets to protect the motor and your other parts.

Another option is to tear down the engine as much as possible (remove head, cylinders, etc.) while it's in the frame. With stuff removed engine is lighter and smaller. Also, drain oil and leave plugs out so they don't hang up on frame. Ed

If I were taking everyhting off the bike I would do this for sure, but I am not stripping it down, so the bike would be really heavy still...I think I am going to do the 2 budies and beer trick :)

Try this,
Get everything ready for it to come out.
Get a cold 12 pack.
Call 2 big friends over.
Give them 1 beer.
Have them pull the engine AND put it on the work bench.
You supervise of course.
Give them 1 more beer each.
Thank them and send them on their way.
Now the good part,,,,,,,,
Turn up the music ,
AND you have 8 cold beers while you tare down and make your parts list.

Works for me every time B)

that is just beautiful!

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

OK, so I have everything off, almost ready for the engine to come out, how do I remove the drive chain? I am thinking that I should loosen the rear wheel to slacken the chain, then remove those clips on the c/s sprocket and remove sprocket, is that right?

look for a master link in the drive chain and take it out then you can seperate the chain or if you have an impact gun remove the counter shaft sprocket and the chain will come right off.

so a ratchet won't remove the sprocket? do I need a chain link breaker to remove the master link?

I thought I would do that, but there is that rim that runs right around the chain at the c/s sprocket that prevents me from just removing the chain without removing the sprocket too, unless as tim says I break the chain, although I am kinda leary of breaking the chain, fleetwood mac told me not to...
