-The engine has to come out the right side as the left side front motor mount is welded to the frame.
-Place the bike on the center stand or a rear race stand.
-Position a milk crate on the right side of the bike.
-Take the seat off and straddle the bike.
-These engines are HEAVY but one person can remove it this way.
-You may have to tilt the engine to the left just a bit and work it slowly out to the right. You can take the valve cover off for more clearance but the engine will come out with it still on.
-You'll have to tilt the engine forward a bit as well. Be careful of the exhaust studs, they will hook on the frame.
-Once you get the oil drain plug past the frame rail you can get off the bike and put the engine on the milk crate.
-Don't leave the engine on the crate too long in case it gets knocked off.
WATCH YOUR FINGERS!!!!! Almost lost a thumb doing this back in the day.

Some folks have mentioned removing everything, then lay the frame/engine over in the grass, then lift the frame off the engine.
Works great with 2 people!

Get everything ready for it to come out.
Get a cold 12 pack.
Call 2 big friends over.
Give them 1 beer.
Have them pull the engine AND put it on the work bench.
You supervise of course.
Give them 1 more beer each.
Thank them and send them on their way.
Now the good part,,,,,,,,
Turn up the music ,
AND you have 8 cold beers while you tare down and make your parts list.
Works for me every time
