Kz650 Points Question? was created by oxcadillacxo
OK i bought 1978 kz650 for 100 dollars i got it to run but only on 2 cylinders (1-4) will run 2-3 no fire! so i thought it might be the coils but i hooked the trigger wires from coils 1-4 and put them on 2-3 and 2-3 fire then 1-4 dont so i guess its a ignition problem the bike has electronic ignition! i am going back to points system!

MY QUESTION IS WHAT SPINS AROUND TO HIT THE POINTS AND MAKE THEM WORK?? I BOUGHT A POINTS PLATE AND POINTS OFF EBAY BUT I DONT THINK I HAVE THE ECCENTRIC OR WHAT EVER ITS CALLED TO MAKE THE POINTS WORK ALL I HAVE IS THE ELECTRONIC IGNITION ASSEMBLY!

You need the unit that bolts on the end of the crankshaft, It should have the centrifuge advance device connected to as well

There is a cam that strikes the points to make them contact. It fits on the end of the crankshaft. Also, you no longer will need the ignitor box. Instead a 12v wire goes to both coils, and then a green or a black wire (one to each coil) to discharge the coil for spark. Pretty straight forward in some respects.

It appears someone has beaten me to it. Oh well.

The point's cam is part of the advancer, #15 on the drawing. It comes off easily and can be replaced, but I don't think you'll find it as a seperate part. It'll usually be part of the assembly.

However, Anyone that has converted to a Dyna S from points should have just the cam lobe for you. When they convert to the Dyna S they have to remove it and replace it with a magnetic rotor that comes with the Dyna S.

I would post a thread in the electrical forum and ask Dyna S users (on KZ 650's) if they want to sell the points cam.

Most of the electronic ignition kits will not use the point's cam, so whoever converted your bike, tossed it or still has it.

The ones for electronic ignitions will be smooth with a magnet imbedded, or will have a point to be sensed by a pickup, or will have a big plastic round thing for a light sensor.

I bet you could get a points cam from a member here with a 650 who did the conversion.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationHere is one for sale:
Brand new, rare, and cheap (at the moment).

That is what it looks like (the bolt and end nut are missing). Notice how the outer part of the shaft is not centered with the hole. It's because it is a cam. The thick part goes around, it pushes on the points to open them.

It sounds like the whole rotor is missing. Someone must have taken the rotor and all you are seeing is the shaft of the advancer unit. (The rotor of an electronic ignition is what replaces the points cam.)

EDIT: this can't be right if you are getting spark on one of the coils.
