Thanks for the pictures. That goes into an oil galley, right? Unfortunately on my engines, there isn't any place to install one of those where it's visible. While you have it out, boil some water and see if it reads 212 Degrees F.

I have mine sitting in the freezer of my refrigerator here at work, and it's currently reading 9.8 Degrees F and slowly going lower. That doesn't seem right, but it's sitting in the frosted metal freezer section.
5.3 Degrees F now as I finish this post, abnd it looks to have stopped going lower.

actaully the one in the galley is a pressure guage, the temp guage screws in place of factory oil fill cap.....like i said, i dont know how accurate it is, one of these days i ll try the
boil water trick.....used to do that years ago to test car thermostats.......

Water boils at 215 Degrees F according to the Daytona Temperature Gauge. It's a little slower to react than the Autometer Sport Comp 2 1/16" Mechanical Oil temp Gauge I had testing along side it as the water temperatures started to rise.

I wonder why the numbers from 180 to 260 are bigger than the rest? Maybe they're trying to tell us something?

The Autometer read a little over 212 Degrees F when the water started to boil. Not bad.

So there I have it. the temps I was reading were correct on the Daytona. It's going back on tomorrow, and this weekend better oil will be used in all of my oil-cooled engines from now on.

Thanks for the space for learning.

Here's the update. I've been riding the bike all week(rain or shine), and in the cool morning hours on the ride into work, I have a 20-25 minute stretch of freeway riding 75 mph at about 6,500 rpm. Oil temps are about 240-245 Degrees F. In the evening ride home, crusing about 80-85 mph and around 7,000 rpms I'm getting temps in the 260-265 Degree F Range. I'm now and forever using a full synthetic motorcycle oil in the 20w-50 weight regardless how much it costs, because I know the internals are being protected. Planning changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles, or about every 3 months. Commuting about 360 a week.
