Yea 1981 was the first cooler from the factory on the GPZ550 and GPZ1100. KZ1000 Eddie Lawson Replica was the only KZ1000 from the factory with a cooler. Even the police bikes in later years didn't have an oil cooler.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks for the replies, My next question is does anyone have an opinion on whether I should keep it on the bike or not? I am looking at keeping the bike mostly stock..but if the oil cooler is a big benifit I will leave it on. Otherwise sell it? Oh I am aware that unsure is one word..oops

DEFINITELY keep it....huge benefits from an oil cooler..there is a reason most of them have one...
i wouldnt be without one with an air cooled motor..
these things need all the help they can get in the cooling dept, especially in the summertime....excess heat kills!!...keith

I'd like to get an oil cooler but I have a question.
Do you run the same amount of oil as you would stock or do you need to use more? Do you still go by the site glass?

Thanks;)

When I had a cooler on my bike it took a little more oil.
Still used the site glass to check level.

I dont think you really need them on a bone stock regular 1000 or 900. My 1105/900 block definetly needs one, you can feel the heat coming off of it especially in traffic. Going across the Mojave desert I was glad my 82 GPZ 750 had one on it at 117 degrees. A thermostat on them is what you need so the oil isnt too cool.

Thanks guys. Not meaning to hijack your thread chelms27 but what brand would you guys recommend and where do you get them? I assume they come in different sizes so what would I need for my stock motor? Someday when my money tree starts growing again, I plan on a big bore job so will the same size work or would I have to upgrade?

Thanks;)
