I've got that too, I think my Dyna just needs to be adjusted a bit, she'll run rougher down low, but I need more advance up top though. We'll see what happens with the huge cylinders.

So, my problem could be ignition related as well? I'm still using stock ignition and will get a Dyna this winter.

Wondering if it's ignition or carb related?

I noticed a flat spot as well, after switching rides with zixxerboy and his kz650.
I switched over to a Kawi electronic ignition last Winter, and it doesn't have the flat spot anymore.
When running points, I hadn't maintained them much over a few years so it doesn't surprise me that she wasn't running to her full potential.

Thanks Rick. Hopefully that is my issue as well. I'll hold off messing with the carbs until I get the Dyna in this winter and see how it goes.

herrdeacon it sounds to me your a bit lean on the needle id raise it up one clip and see if that changed it it probable wont be ignition related because it goes to full advance at a much lower rpm then this problem is showing up at. it should't take more than an hour to change the clip position so give it a try. if it makes it worse go the other way but the way you have described the problem it makes me think its lean.

So, out of curiosity. What is the difference between changing the clip position and changing the size of the main jet. Meaning, what is the effect of each, and how do you know when to do either?

when you raise the needle it allows it to come out of the main jet sooner, and allow fuel to come out quicker. the needle has its biggest effect on the midrange

Thought I should update this thread to let you know the dead spot now seems to be gone. Over the winter I cleaned the head, valves, adjusted shims, and installed Dyna-S, Dyna coils and wires. Only had a chance to test it a couple of times, but it now pulls hard right through the 5000-7000 range.

Thanks for everyones help.

Next ride, go ahead and run her up to redline. The power really starts to come on at about 7000. Your just tickling with the power band. Run her up and report back! :)

Absolutly you need to give it some "stick" I am convinced that these motors were designed to operate in two speeds, off and wide open.;)

By today's standards these are not fast bikes, but they certianly aren't slow either. You have to remember these engines where technological marvels when they came out 30 years ago, let her spin! that's what hey were designed to do. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.
