ZR-7, GPZ, z750

Steel wrote too Bud1 about putting a zr-7 engine in a '77 650 frame. That got me thinking and searching on the web. Found out that the zr-7 has 75 HP at the crank, is this correct? That doesnt seem like a lot for a 2000 engine:( . Doesnt the Gpz have 85 HP and its an older style:S .
Anyways I was wondering if this engine can substain high rpm abuse. I've read on this site that some of you have had the 650 and 750 engines to 13000 rpm.:whistle: . Well can the newer zr7 engine go that high? :dry: . And why does this engine have such low #'s for being newer design. Are the cams different? I tried looking for a specification chart on this but I guess I just dont know where to look.
One last thing. Would the 810 kit fit in one of these?:huh:

Would it be easy to sqeeze 115 HP out of this engine?:evil:

Snakebyte, even though I own a 2001 ZR-7 I can't tell you a whole lot about it's history, other than the engine is basically a GPZ engine.
I do know that there are 810 kits available for the ZR. If you haven't done so yet, go to zr-7.com, which has all kinds of info on the origins and performance specs of the bike/engine.
When you click on "forums" it will direct you to riderforums.com; from there you can search all you want. Of course to ask questions you will have to register.
When searching for info on the 810 kit,look for posts from member Tom Droze. I hope this helps somewhat.

man now you have me wanting one of these bikes. Its everything i like about my 650 resto project; execpt much newer and able to use wider radial tires.

I espacally like the looks of them without the faring (the zr-7 modle came without a fairing, but was never sold in the US according to what i have been reading).

I wonder if the head/jugs are interchangable with KZ's??

Not sure about the history of the engine either. But when the bike was released most of the magazines dissed it slightly as crude feeling and dating to the original kz650. Looking at one in the showroom I can attest that the engine cases are very similiar to the KZ650. Only noticeable difference I saw was how the clutch cable route and operates.

People apparently have had good luck using the ZR-7 base gasket on KZ750 motors as well. It's apparently a more modern gasket with better materials and cheaper than the one for the 750.

I've thought about trying to put one of these motors in a KZ650 as well. After spending a couple of grand on my motor it puts out 80hp at the tire. The ZR-7 motor has most of the "good stuff" already in it. Electronic ignition etc. I've seen these bikes listed for $2K. So you can get them cheap, might make a very fun track bike.

Actually the ZR-7 was produced and sold in the US for the 2000 model year. Then from 2001-2003 (now discontinued) the bike sported a half-fairing and was sold as the ZR-7S.
I know one thing, I'd LOVE to find a set of instruments from the non-faired model to use on my Z1 rebuild. They are HOT! And obviously rare and expensive because they were only produced for one year.

Didnt find out much on the web. Seams like noone has a zr7 for sale either.

Somebody's surely done this, I've been waiting for someone else to do it first and report back! Here's an archive item regarding a gpz750 w/zephyr 750 powerplant and electrics, should be basically the same as the zr7 stuff. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
