Piston hitting a valve, timing off? How far did you take your bike apart to remove it from the frame? Sorry, I am in Texas. If your avatar is a pic of your bike, I have an identical bike but an 82 and red......chris3

I'm new here so don't know much but you could look for posts about the starter clutch.
Mine made a nasty sound when I was trying to get it running, it had sat for years prior to my purchase.
It would turn over and a bit then make gringing, crashing, banging metalic sounds.
After I got it running for abit and changed the oil it starts up fine.
Reading others threads I'm assuming it was the starter clutch.
Maybe your's is as well and will be OK after a bit of running.

there is always fast by gast on grand island but it will cost you.

now my question to you is
did you take anything in the motor apart or just remove it from the frame?

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

All of s sudden we have two questions. Why is the engine locked after removal? Could the starter cause this? Is the engine locked, put in neutral remove plugs, remove the point cover apply 17mm wrench on crank and try to turn engine. If it dont don't force. Try hitting the starter button and bump it. If that dont work you put something back wrong. As for the starter the grinding sound is the starter clutch , the springs inside the clutch got out of place, It will have to be repaired sooners or later

the only thing i took off the engine to remove it was the valve cover .... and if i take the plugs out i still get nothing or if u take a wrench to the altornator cover and try to turn it by hand it goes about 90% of the way then hits on something

Ron, Remove the valve cover and look down in the cam chain well with a flashlight. If you don't see anything obvious, pull the engine out, turn it over and remove the bottom case half. You can then easily find the junk you dropped in the engine. It ain't a big deal to do this. I can do it in a few hours. The only negative is that you will need a gasket set as all case cover gaskets will have to come off, the surfaces scraped and new gaskets installed. The gasket scraping takes longer than splitting the cases and pulling the engine.

i agree.
were you missing any bolts and used another one instead?
i would pull the cover again and look around.
then try to turn it with the cover off.
see if anything is binding up.( well that you can see )
maybe a cam end plug shifted or something.

it is not unheard of for a bolt from somewhere else to fall in when you were tugging on the motor to remove it.
