I thought I was doing the right thing for my baby by tourqing the cam caps and my clymer manual says "79 and later kz 1000 tourque to 12ft. pounds." and zing there goes my happy day with a nice bunch of aluminum wrapped around one of the cap bolts. so after I peeled myself from the ceiling of the garage and searched the forum for "stripped cam bolt holes" voila! 8-9 ft pounds seems to be the norm. maybe I should get the clymer guys over here to FIX IT.

Anyway can I helicoil the hole without taking the camshaft out. I really don't want to open up a hole can of worms with the timing and all that I am trying to avoid going over my head too much. If I really have to take the camshaft out I will. After all I can just follow my manual!!!:woohoo:

Your manual said THAT much?!

I don't see why you couldn't just revove the one cap,and helicoil that stripped hole,if you're VERY careful, picking up any shavings.
If you rotate the engine so that neither of the 2 lobes on that side of the cam are pushing down too much on either of the shims(valves),you should have no problems removing that one cap.
Doing this will keep the tension on the OTHER 2 lobes,at the opposite end of that cam, which ARE still bolted down.

If you build a wall of grease around the hole in question, that will help to keep any shavings from dropping into the bottom cam-bearing area.

Yep, I torque mine to 8 lbs and stop there. I always get sooooo nervous when I'm doing it. Got...to...get...to...8 lbs...........there! Whew! :S

As far as repairing it without removing the cams, I've done it once for one of the outside bolts. I don't know if you could get to the inner bolts.

One trick I used was to smear a glob of grease around the hole, then cover the whole head with foil. Press the foil down on the hole so the grease "seals" the foil to the head. This will help catch any cuttings and keep them out of the head.

Which cap got it,btw?
Remember...caps 1 and 3 are the caps that have the slots in them,to keep the cam from sliding side to side.Very important that the cam doesn't slide to either side when you loosen the caps.I realize that you will only be loosening ONE cap,but I have to mention this, because if you don't have caps 1 and 3 in place properly, you COULD snap a cap when you go to tighten it down.

I would go ahead and hili-coil every cam cap hole, that's what I did years ago. No problems since.

I guess so,eh Mark, being as they were maybe ALL torqued to that setting.
Something to concider,downhandonly.

I still can't believe that ANY manual would state that!
12 FOOT pounds? That's equal to 144 INCH pounds, and the FSM states the proper torque on those bolts to be 95-113 INCH pounds.
