Installing Oil cooler on \"J\" Engine
03 Jan 2008 16:39
This past weekend, I installed my new 1135 10.25 pistons and cyls onto my M2. Fired right up, and seems to be running well, though I've only done a few laps around the neighborhood so far (need to get it registered and insured before I do any serious road testing).
Now my thoughts are turning to possibly adding an oil cooler. I've done some reading on this site about oil coolers, and I wasn't able to find all the info I needed. So here's my question.
Where do I need to hook up the oil lines to the engine? On the "J" engine, it looks like there is a plug just below the cyls on the right side. I assume that is where I would attach one hose.
There appears to be another plug in the side of the oil pressure switch mount. Is that where I would attach the other hose?
Another question. How important is it to have a thermostat switch?
Are there any KZ models that came with oil coolers that would just bolt-on to my M frame? I see on the frame that there are mounting holes there. Anyone know if coolers from any other specific model have the same spacing?
Thanks.

wrong hole, get an oil cooler switch/fitting from any gpz1100 or the oilcooler cop bikes, basically any big thousand that came from the factory with it.
its the device next to the crancase vent, your oil pressure light connects to it, most gpz fittings do not have that sensor, any automotive oil guage will plug into that plug you are talking about on the right.
i bought a Nos oil cooler for a gpz and waited and waited untill a fitting poped up on ebay, it came all the way from austrailia, its a bolt on procedure with no hose making or tapping needed.

when looking on ebay try searching using the word "switch" as well, it may take a few weeks for one to pop up.
or try your local parts yard.

This is a picture of a 1981 GPz1100 Oil Cooler bypass and should fit most any "J" model cases. The bypass does in fact come with the oil pressure switch from the factory and you can see the large threaded hole where it screws in.
You can use a stock GPz1100 cooler and lines or you can drill and tap for fittings as I have done.

Thanks. If I can't find a cheaper used GPz unit on Ebay, I may go with that option.

No, I think those are only for the older engine style, and they won't work on the "J". Thanks, though.
