kz 1300 cylinder liners was created by jjdwoodman
Tomorrow's D -day on whether to get the kz 1300, so I'm cramming. On last post it was suggested that kz 650 pistons might interchange with the 1300 pistons. So my question is can you change out the liners also to allow for an 810 piston? Or am I going at this all wrong? Are cylinder liners even similar between air and liquid cooled. The 1300 is a foreign beast to me, so if it seems like my heads stuck between my legs, that's just because it is. In the end can this be the awsome project I think it can, or just a pipe dream?

I ride a 1300 and have one on the bench. The liners are cast into the block just like an aircooled KZ. As a matter of fact the 1300 is just a KZ900 with two more cylinders and a water jacket, even uses the same valve shims. That's not to say they use the same pistons just a very similar design.

I remember that Klasmo Bikes used to have something about 1480,1420 & 1600 cc engine mods to their turbo bike using REC pistons but I just reviewed their site and couldn't find it again.

what I have found so far in kz1300.com says there's just no meat on the skirts for boring. Don't know the validity of that but the cylinders are the same diameter as a kz 650, just longer stroke.

Meanwhile, I went ahead and bought it just to prove I could, and she's locked up like Fort Knox. IN the process of pulling the engine out to get the heads off and see what's up. How do you slide that beast out of the frame? I have a 3 ton floor jack, but my cherry picker's 3 hours away taking up much needed space out of my shop.

And Hello to the land of high desert! beautiful country there my wife lived in Bend a few years lot of nice Pics.B)

Nix that! She lived in Halfway when she didn't live in Junction.

Hey JJ,
I expect that you mean Junction City which is in Western Oregon. Halfway is nearer to Idaho and the Snake River canyon than it is to Bend.

Here are couple of recent pics of the Three Sisters, the first from Bend's Pilot Butte and the second from Mount Bachelor.

whoa! My father in law'll be drooling over those. He wanted to move to Bend cause there's a church over in Redmond. But land's outrageous there! Fastest growing in OR isn't it? Myself I've only been down in the Wilamette? valley and over to Coos Bay and we did take one trip up to Klamath Falls while we were there.:P

Meanwhile here in the armpit of the country, I've been wrenching on that engine for about six hours. I have everything off I think, but I can't get those bolts on the coils broke loose. Been soaking them, and got one loose but can't even budge the others with vice grips. This whole bike is just sunburnt? Can you get it out with them on? I know I need a book and that's in the works. but I'd like to at least get the heads off and peek inside if I can with out breaking a golden egg. Also do I have to take off the bottom pan?

Anything to just get it out. Oh and I hope you're not on fire out there. Last year was our year to burn.

Well that all just depends...

Right now the pipe dream is just that. Since it doesn't look like I can get cams anything else, I guess I'll just have to bore it best I can to drop the compression and then blow it. I saw a picture of a turbo on a 1300 but really trying to get this one out, I don't know how he found the room. Or where he got the turbo I gather he fabbed it all himself but if you see a kit for that kick it my way. I'll strap in so the sticker shock don't knock me off the chair.

Hi JJ,

"Can you get it out with them on?"

No they have to come off. I ended up keeping the one that mounts between the frame tubes but I moved the two that hang down toward the engine to the old tool tray location.

I also got rid the air injection system. Believe it or not I can now remove the valve cover without removing ANYTHING else.

I guess I'll have to grind the heads off. maybe after I can get a better grip on the shanks and get the rest out. Thinking about doing the Chevy coil conversion. Were you the one here that did that and then went withthe Dynas?

Yeah, that's my article.

Don't waste your time with the GM Coil pack.

I liked the looks of the Dyna's but I really want to mount all six as far from the enginge heat as I can, even if I had to fab up a different air box to put two of them there. Do you think there's room anywhere else to mount the other two?
