It is what you want! You like something, then you pay for it. I was a drag racer. That's why no one wanted shaft drives, holeshot that and you turned right. Easily changed over though. I just passed on a 1980 KZ1000 shaft for $800. My buddy got it for $500. (I did not offer at all) It had a V/H street 4 into 1 header.
But every one should hope the values are up. Everyone puts them down, ain't worth it! Don't want to pay anything! But everyone wants to sell it for top dollar. Sure they all need pistons & boring ($750) Head job ($400) And your back to square one.
If you want one, you will get one.

Livin in "CheektaVegas, NY
Went thru 25 of these in 40 yrs.
I SOLD OUT! THE KAW BARN IS EMPTY.
More room for The Old Girl, Harley 75 FLH Electra Glide,
Old faithful! Points ign. Bendix Orig. carb.
Starts everytime!

"holeshot that and you turned right" What does it mean?
"Easily changed over though." Are you talking about people converting shaft to chain?
" I just passed on a 1980 KZ1000 shaft for $800. My buddy got it for $500." What was its condition? Was it running?

They had a tendency to pull to one side. Slower than chain driven. Where are you getting your HP figures?

And I dont like splitting the Z1 into years (forget the 72 crap, that's an early 73... Just like there isn't a 64 1/2 mustang or a 70 1/2 camaro. Find me official literature that says otherwise...)

Andrew, I don't think It's getting a bit too crazy, when Car was asking the value of KZ 1000's/ 1100's, unless you don't consider Rickman's/ Harris's or Egli's , KZ 1000's, They were, & why did you bring up 64 1/2 & 70 1/2 mustangs & Z28's,, Whats THAT crap about, they were only called that by individuals because of their manufacturing dates, they were still considered 64 Mustangs & 70 Camaro Z28's, if we're talking about the value of KZ 1000's/ 1100's, I think ALL should be considered , just because they were , Rickman's/ Harris's or Egli's , does NOT mean they were not KZ 1000's, they are just not as known as other KZ's because of their least production,, just like the MKII's & theZ1R's, that were the least sold at the time, but are worth BIG money now, !!!, You didn't even mention the Turbo KZ Z1R's , or is that' getting a bit too crazy,?
Pete

1980 LTD 1000..,1976 LTD 900, have the 1000&900 now. the rest are previous= 1978 KZ 650 B.., 1980 Yamaha XT 500..,1978 Yamaha DT 400.., 1977 Yamaha yz 80..,Honda trail ct 70.., Honda QA 50...5-1/2 hp brigs & straton CAT chopper mini bike...3-1/2 hp mini bike (WHEN GAS WAS ABOUT 45 CENTS A GALLON)!!!!

Kawasaki caught on to the aftermarket success and did their own. Some I liked and some I didn't. When they started this KZ thing, it didn't make sense to me. I didn't know they were introducing like models. I do like the fact I have a Z1 that started the whole thing. B) Only one Honda gave me a run, that was Miller's HiondaDavidson.
Now I like them all, even the "shaftys."

Yea, for the factory models, the ST is near bottom. I had a guy from England buy some of my old Kawasakis and parts, and he paid $2000 for an old H2 that I thought worth a couple hundred bucks, and didn't even care to look atmy 1000ST.
For the 1000s I'd rate as:
1982 ELR
1983 ELR
1979 KZ1000MKII
1978 Z1R
1980 Z1R
1980 KZ1000A4 ( never officially a MKII, but same idea)
1977-78 KZ1000A
1979-80 KZ1000ST
1977-80 KZ1000B Ltd
In KZ900/Z1 I would put the 73Z1 as probably even ahead of the 82 ELR, 74-75 Z1 about even with the 79 MKIi, 1976 KZ900 about even with the 77-78 KZ1000A. 1976 KZ900LTD just below that. All GPZ1100 right after KZ900LTD. KZ1100 even with KZ1000ST, although KZ1000 WAS much better in all regards. KZ1000J, not great, but has some good, and would probably fall above the KZ1000A in my books. Oh well just my own opinion.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Too many variations to remember. I cut way back on bike time lately. Other toys to tend to, and I bring up the camaros and mustangs because folks are starting to call early production z1s 72 models. If it worked that way my truck is a 2000 and not a 2001.

I had a couple boxes of parts that were a z1rtc, that got traded for a whole running 77 1000A.

my bikes; 80kz1000(project), 77 gl1000, 74 h2 (project)
Past; 78 kz1000, 83 kz550

I now understand the chain question. It is what it is and always will be. Converting it won't make it something it's not value wise.
I won't even mention what I think of someone who tries to do this to sell as something it isn't..

It is impossible to convert it to chain and sell as Mk2, VIN number will still be "shaft" VIN. And chain is not the only difference. Fuel tank, fairing and many more details.
