Here's another that mentions heat as the reason for reducing the speed rating:

I know the feeling! Way back in the late '70's I was running Michelin tires with the PZ2 compound. I could put 1,000 miles on the rear; 2,000 miles on the front before they were shot. Back then I was running 6,000 miles a year, and at $100 per tire I was spending $900 per year on tires. After 2 years I came to my senses and stopped running the racing compound on the street, Too much money, but man, those tires really did stick to the road like glue! Ed

are you doing burnouts everywhere you go? I have gone through several sets of 712's and usually get about 8k on the rear, 12k on the front. although the last rear tire I rode down to the steel.

No joke, I put 6000 at least on mine and they still look new...but I ride like an old man. LolDoctoRot wrote:

5k launches, small wheelies, downshifting, and lots of twisty roads and your tires wear down pretty quickly. I'm also riding in a lot of stop n go traffic (inner city in Memphis), and I tend to like to accelerate quickly (which leads to breaking more quickly), so my tires wear out pretty quick. Even with good tires, I usually last less than 5,000 miles on the rear, and usually 10,000+ on the front, with a good tire, like the dunlop gt501.
Also, I usually change tires, as soon as my tread is down to 1/16" or less, on atleast 60% of the tire. So, I may still have a few hundred miles of life, but with the way I ride, I change tires frequently.
